1. Status of Nepal
1. Ten-year civil war in Nepal (from 1996 to 2006) claimed more than 103,000 lives, followed by economic depression, depriving hundreds of thousands people of this extremely poor country in the world of the means of livelihood.
2. After Nepal's hereditary king was overthrown, 80 political parties formed. There were different factions in the political parties grappled with their party and personal interests. They easily took the measures of blocking the traffic and staging strike, so that the Nepalese capital Kathmandu and other places plunged into chaos, thus delaying the second important public service event of the Foundation for 3 hours. Apart from having Himalayas, Ngozumpa Glacier and historical relics (Kathmandu Durbar Square and other world cultural heritages), Nepal is also well-known for poverty, disease, dirtiness and chaos.
2. Outcome of Chou Ta-Kuan Foundation's Send Love to Nepal Charity Events
1. Send Love to Kathmandu Childre’s Hospital: A group of 4 members Chou Chin-Hua (Founder of Chou Ta-Kuan Foundation), Guo Ying-Lan (President of Chou Ta-Kuan Foundation), Chien Chih-Ming (Head of Love Brothers Volunteer Group), Chou Tien-Guan (Head of the Chou Ta-Kuan Children's Ensemble), accompanied by Duhlikhel (Superintendent of Kathmandu Childre's Hospital), played Taiwan and Hakka folk songs with ocarina for the sick children in each ward, and gave gifts to 378 sick children as well as Chou Ta-Kuan's I Still Have One Leg (Chinese-English version on January 18, 2012 (Wed.), 1 pm to 3 pm (originally 10 am to 12 am. But the event was delayed to 1 pm due to traffic disruption caused by struggle). This event received immense response from medical volunteers, Nepal's medical staff, sick children and their families. They admitted that this was the first time charity organizations from Taiwan sent music, gifts and care to each ward, filling the white cold wards with happiness, warmth and boundless love.
2. Send Love to Jhanmak Kumari Ghimire (Nepali female writer with Cerebral Palsy: On the morning of January 19, 2012 (Thu.), a group of 4 members including Chou Chin-Hua, accompanied by G. Uprety (Vice President of Nepal Institute) paid a visit to Jhanmak Kumari Ghimire (she was born with acute severe cerebral palsy. She could not speak or write and her only way to communicate with others was to write by holding a pen with her right foot. Not only did she overcome disability, and could display strength, hope and love by writing. She has written 14 works such as Is Life a Thorn Or Flower. She was honored the Maddan Puraskar Award in literature, and is also the winner of the 15th Fervent Global love of Lives Award). Chou Ta-Kuan Foundation sponsored $ 2,000 USD for the round trip expense of Jhanmak Kumari Ghimire and her parents to attend the awarding ceremony in Taiwan from September 14 to 22, 2012. At the request of the Nepalese media, a press conference titled "Let Love from Taiwan Touch the World ─ Send Love to Nepal Charity Events" was convened on the afternoon of January 19 (Thu.) for the first time. Meanwhile, the Foundation filmed a documentary about Jhanmak Kumari Ghimire. 4 major media including Xinhua News Agency and Citizen FM 94 MHz covered the entire events, arousing sympathy and touching all walks of Nepal.
3. Send Love to Prison Love House: (1) Chou Chin-Hua and other members paid a visit to Prison Love House on the morning of January 20, 2012 (Fri.). They cared about the inmates' children in Nepal, who were the most vulnerable group in Nepal. In addition to playing Taiwan and Hakka folk songs with ocarina for and giving Taiwan gifts to the children, they also donated $1,000 USD to buy new thermal quilts, in the hope that they would feel the warmth from Taiwan in cold winter. (2) Gobinda Pradhan, the founder of Prison Love House, is also the winner of the Fervent Global Love of Lives Award. Before 35 years old, he was a gangster, and had alcoholism, drug abuse, drug trafficking, fighting and stealing. Most of his time was spent in the prison and street. Until he was 35 years old in 1985, Gobinda Pradhan resolutely decided to be baptized in Nepal where Hinduism is prevalent, so he returned from the lost way and mended his ways. He braved the prisons to preach the Gospel. Also, he set up three "Home of Love" to look after the inmates' children, provided them with training in sewing, electronics, engine repair, computer information and other skills, and changed their fate of becoming socially marginalized people.
4. Send Love to Landseed Nepal Medical Station and B.P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital:
(1) Landseed Nepal Medical Station: The station was designed by Chien Chih-Ming (Head of Love Brother Volunteer Group, the volunteer construction team in Nepal was recruited. Besides, the building materials and salaries of local young people were sponsored by the Landseed Medical Foundation. It was expected to be completed on August 31, 2012. After completion, medical volunteers from Taiwan would offer long-term free treatment there, allowing the love from Taiwan to be sent to Nepal. (2) BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital: The Hospital was founded by Mainland China in 1998. Situated in Nepal, it is the largest and most complete cancer hospital bordering India and Tibet. It is sponsored by Hebei Province People's Hospital for a long time. One every two years, Hebei Province People's Hospital sent 20 medical specialists to offer treatment in each stage. It is very likely to cure cancer based on exchange and cooperation of TCM and Western medicine. Government and business people in India, Nepal and other countries came to receive this treatment. The Chinese medical team leader Han T'ung-Piao (Chinese Traditional Medicine Administration of Hebei Province) particularly welcomed Chou Chin-Hua, hoping that Taiwan and Mainland can have more exchanges and mutual aid in respect of overseas charity and let the love from both sides touch the world.
5. Visit the Chinese Embassy in Nepal and UNICEF Nepal Office: (1) Chou Chin-Hua and other members paid a visit to Yang Hou-Lan (Ambassador of Chinese Embassy in Nepal) on January 20, 2012 (Fri.), and maintained that international charity needed more exchanges and mutual assistance. Besides, the Foundation would initiate the "Donation of second-hand Children's Clothes ‧ Warm Nepal's Sick Children Events", asked Ambassador Yang to offered assistance to prevent the corrupt officials in Nepal from picking the good quality children's clothes and from imposing high import tariffs. Ambassador Yang readily agreed to assist the events on the spot. (2) Chou Chin-Hua and other members paid a visit to UNICEF Nepal Office on January 22 (Sun.) before returning to Taiwan. The office had long admired Taiwan's help to the disadvantaged in the world, and hoped to have the opportunity to organize international charitable activities.
3. Prospects of Chou Ta-Kuan Foundation for Nepal
(1) To launch the series charity activities "Love from Taiwan with Clothes -- Donation of second-hand Children's Clothes ‧ Warm Nepal's Sick Children Events" and collect ten thousand children jackets to help ten thousand sick children in Nepal against cold winter.
(2) To draw on Chiayi Do Good Volunteer Group which paved the way. After the Landseed Nepal Medical Station was completed, Nepal's local young people participating in building the Medical Station were recruited to become the permanent Landseed Work Team to give full play to their building skills. In the ways of using local materials, seeking local employment and barter, the Foundation built permanent environmental protection houses for the locals. For instance, they can exchange thirty chickens or a cow or five sheep for a house of 30 square meters. In this way, they can help themselves and others, allowing the love from Taiwan to take root and thrive in Nepal.
