At the age of three spots appeared on Wu-En-Yu’s limbs, he was then diagnosed with blood cancer. During his childhood, he frequently visited the hospital for treatment, bravely battling cancer. While he has never attended kindergarten, last year he successfully gained admission to Sheng-Li Elementary School Pingtung County giving him the opportunity to study and play alongside peers of his age, which he regards as the happiest moments in his life.
Experiencing many surgeries and enduring long recoveries Wu’s mother reported that despite the excruciating process of reintroducing food and water, which often causing pain, Wu did not complain nor cry. Although it was heartbreaking to witness, she found his courage moving. Furthermore, Wu was nicknamed the model for children with cancer.
Wu’s mother reported that he was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at birth and leukaemia at the age of 3. Wu has been taking blood samples, receiving blood transfusions, check-ups, and chemotherapy for as long as he can remember. Besides the common side effects of hair loss and vomiting, the medication created holes in Wu’s intestines, requiring emergency surgery. After removing a large portion of his colon, his life was fortunately preserved.
Wu asked why he wasn’t able to attend school like other children, this question stuck with his mother. After deeming his situation as stable, last year he was allowed to attend Shing-Li Elementary School Pingtung County, as a first year student, bringing him great joy.
The foundation’s CTK Wishing Scholarship for Cancer Patients scholarship was thus awarded to Wu for his lionhearted battle with leukaemia. Chou-Chin-Hua; founder of the foundation’s expressed that battles with cancer are long, strenuous and lonely. It brings great pleasure to see that Wu was able to matriculate in a primary school, allowing for growth. He hopes that Wu’s story is able to inspire more people and pledges that no child battling cancer shall face the illness alone.
