Chou Ta-Kuan Foundation’s Global Fervent Love of Life Award has been issued to 3 brave warriors; a man who lost his life in a shooting, a anti-drug advocate and a person with Down syndrome who thrived in life despite initial diagnosis of peaking at the mental age of an average 7-year-old.
After taking the position as a representative of The United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organisation, Gloria Pachon became modern history movie like. Born in Columbia, she supported her husband Luis Carlos Galán in his candidacy to become president. While the world longed for a new president to be elected, Luís lost his life in a shooting incident involving drugs and guerrilla soldiers, changing her life.
When life handed Gloria lemons, she made lemonade. After her husband’s shooting incident, she and her three children migrated to France and started their anti-drug advocacy. She educated the youth to stay away from drugs across the globe and even finished her work“August 18 th ”; revealing the corruption behind Columbia drug lords. After careful consideration, she was awarded Chou Ta-Kuan Foundation’s 24 th Fervent Global Love of Lives Award in 2021.
Like Gloria, Madeline Stuart showed determination in life. At birth, clinicians estimated that her mental age would not surpass the average 7-year-old and even emphasised the possibility of not accomplishing much in life. Madeline however, is the first model with down-syndrome. In 2015, Madeline came in contact with a fashion show, sparking a desire in her. With determination, she entered the fashion circle, becoming the first model with down-syndrome to model at London and Paris fashion week and has more and a million followers on social media.
Madeline previously expressed that she always believed she was extraordinary and that she had a goal of influencing society to accept the presence of people with disabilities, cherishing their successes and contributions. She also founded a dance school for people with disabilities, providing education and performance opportunities. Moreover, she single handedly launched her fashion brand “21 Reasons Why”. Although she has abnormalities in her 21 st chromosome, it should not obstruct the celebration of her life. Madeline is the best example of “God created us perfect”.
Ji Peng-Fong is another notable person with down-syndrome from Taiwan, who graduated from National Taichung Special Education School. He was diagnosed with down-syndrome 3 days after birth, impacting his single mother heavily. Ji Peng-Fong was frequently ill as a child; not being able to walk at the age of 3, not being able to speak at the age of 4 and taking 12 years to understand traffic lights however, his mother never gave up on him. After battling breast cancer, she single handedly raised Ji Peng-Fong.
Ji Peng-Fong’s life has gone more and more smoothly, not only did he place first in a national talent competition for people with disabilities, he even place first in a national swimming and track competition for people with disabilities. He has a license for street performance on the electric keyboard, 11 licences for street performance playing the Ocarina and was awarded Chou Ta-Kuan Foundation’s Fervent Global Love of Lives Award and the President’s Education Award for people with down-syndrome.
