Every life is a miracle.
“I Can” is the best expression of this miraculous life.
For 30 years, with the support and encouragement from friends at home and abroad, we have continuously promoted the “Global Love of Life Movement,” advocating: Be good to yourself—cherish your life; Be good to others—respect their lives; Be good to the Earth—safeguard its life. To date, we have honored 481 recipients of the Global Love of Life Medal from 81 countries across 7 continents.
Bao Jinrong, the 2001 Future Star and 4th Global Love of Life Medal recipient, embodies the spirit of “I Can—with love in body and mind, nothing stands in the way”:
I Can: The world kissed me with pain, and I must repay it with song. (From Tagore’s Stray Birds)
I Can: Heaven has given me talents, and they must be useful. (From Li Bai’s Bring in the Wine)
I Can: Fulfill the dream of studying abroad for the organ-donating girl.
I Can: Soar against the wind, witnessing miracles through love…
Behind each of Bao Jinrong’s “I Can” moments lies the unwavering support of her angelic father, Bao Chongmin; the wisdom of her angelic mother, Zhu Ruoyu; and the enduring bond of her angelic brother, Bao Jinkun.
Forever etched in memory: On May 24, 2001, at the Kunlun Hall on the 12th floor of Taipei’s Grand Hotel, Bao Jinrong stood alongside recipients of the 4th Global Love of Life Medal. At a press conference before international and domestic media, she spoke the first clear and resonant words on behalf of voiceless cerebral palsy patients worldwide: “Little Grass Chasing the Sunlight.”
Grass cannot grow into towering trunks, nor can it rival trees in height and strength.
Grass cannot bloom into radiant flowers, nor can it compete in beauty with blossoms.
Tiny blossoms cannot yield sweet fruits for us to share.
Yet we never feel ashamed of our smallness,
Unafraid of wildfires’ flames,
Unafraid of iron shovels’ digging,
Unafraid of iron shoes’ trampling.
My seeds scatter far and wide, far and wide, far and wide.
Poets say: spring winds bring new growth—yes! with a single breeze, we sprout anew.
Our life demands little:
Just a sliver of sunlight,
Just a drop of rain,
Just a handful of soil.
No matter how high the mountain, I will scale its peak.
No matter how deep the sea, I will reach its depths.
No matter how long the road, I will keep stretching on.
Ice and snow cannot freeze me,
Heavy stones cannot crush me,
Thick walls cannot block me.
I am a blade of grass with unwavering will, forever pursuing the sunlight.
At that moment, journalists from around the world, together with representatives from all walks of life, were moved to tears. All unanimously affirmed: Bao Jinrong’s heart and spirit were filled with love, and nothing could stand in her way.
Therefore, we sincerely invite people everywhere to hold a copy of I Can, return to a quiet desk, and read of life’s infinite possibilities, and discover life’s boundless gratitude.
