At the age of fifteen, Lin Fu-Yin’s father was involved in a car accident that left him disabled. As the eldest son, Lin took on the responsibility of supporting his family of eight, embarking on a long career in fishing. He achieved outstanding results in fisheries management and made significant contributions to the development of fishing villages and improvements in fishing technology. He was selected by the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan, as one of the Top Ten Outstanding Fishermen of the Republic of China in 1994.
However, he always hoped to return to school one day. In 1999, at the age of fifty, Lin Fu-Yin finally enrolled in the evening school at Keelung City Baidu Junior High School and began experimenting with literary creation. He turned his forty years of fishing life into poetry and paintings, and everyone respectfully referred to him as the “Captain Poet” and “Captain Painter.”

At the age of six, Qiu Junwei was diagnosed with the most severe form of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Though there is currently no cure, and his life is confined to a wheelchair, he bravely faces his deteriorating physical condition under the meticulous care of his mother, Chen Cuihua. He often expresses his thoughts and feelings through painting, using his artistic creations to communicate with the world. He tells everyone he meets, “My atrophied muscles may restrict my body, but they cannot restrict my heart's pursuit of dreams.” Through his self-created Earthworm website, he shares his inspiring life-themed artwork, spreading love to every corner of the world. He has donated proceeds from the sale of his beloved paintings and art books to support underprivileged groups both domestically and internationally and was selected as the recipient of the Third Presidential Education Award.
Chen Jiarui, Director of the Taichung County Cultural Center, stated that Junwei's paintings, regardless of the materials used, feature bold compositions and delicate brushwork. Even when using the Paint program on a computer, he can create works that inspire admiration. For example, his breakthrough piece from 2002, “When a Puppy Meets a Sunflower,” where he metaphorically portrays himself as a puppy standing under a sunflower, focusing intently. This scene moved many adults to reflect on how they pale in comparison to this young hero's relentless pursuit of happiness. Junwei often gets asked how he stays so happy. He admits he has his down days too, but he always reminds himself that things will eventually work out, and he'll find a way to cheer himself up no matter what.
His classmates often assist him with his mobility challenges, and he, in turn, uses his extensive knowledge of natural sciences to help his peers. He said he is fortunate to have a computer as his legs, allowing him to explore new things anytime and become a useful person. Thus, Qiu Junwei, turning adversity into love, bidding farewell to darkness, embracing the sun, painting hope, expressing gratitude, helping himself and others, building a website, and spreading faith, hope, and love, truly deserves the title of “Earthworm Warrior.”
