Love for the Land of Africa
Korean star Hye Ja Kim graduated from the Department of Fine Arts, Ewha Womans University . She became the first generation of KBS actress in 1983. Her father once told her, “To be an actress, you need to be an influential figure like the Russian literature master Tolstoy.” Bearing in mind what her father told her, Hye Ja Kim became the most popular star in Korea and the ambassador of Asia and Africa .”
Hye Ja starred in more than eighty TV series, thirteen dramas, and two movies. She was once awarded six PaekSang Arts Awards, including the best new artist and the best actress, and awarded four pedestals of the Best Actress MBC Awards as well as a special award. She was also awarded East Asia Drama Award, Manila International Film Festival Actress, the Feminist Award of Female Press, and two other Best Model Awards nominated by the commercial business owners. She was the first actress, who won the “ Wiam Chang Chi-y?n Award.”
She gave herself to the work of World Vision. For fifteen years, she helped children ravaged by wars and hunger coming from countries like Ethiopia , Somalia , Ruanda , Bangladesh , Laos , Vietnam , Cambodia , Bosnia , India , Kenya , Uganda , North Korea , Sierra Leone , and Afghanistan . The video—Rain, please come to Africa!—recorded her work of goodwill in the darkest area of Asia and Africa , which was more touching than any of her TV series or movies.
As a result, she gave up her prospective career and devoted herself completely to charities. In the last fifteen years, she said to others, “Wars solve no problems and only cause more children to wander in streets. No matter how reasonable the reasons may be, we cannot initiate wars. We cannot start wars against these children, even if the weapons are flowers!” So she used her love to interpret her respect for life, transmitting love to places where love was most needed. The title of “Goodwill Ambassador” suited her perfectly.
Hye Ja Kim was born in Seoul , Korea , in 1941 with A blood type. She loved flowers and plants, and came from a good family with three sons and daughters. She was a prestigious and talented actress in Korea in 80s and 90s, who was awarded the so-called ??? Award (Now is Ko Du-Shim). In “What is Love”, we could admire her skillful acting techniques. In the end of 80s, “Late Autumn” was awarded international awards, and made her name list in the Korea movie history.
Since 90s, she involved herself in charities. In recent ten years, as a goodwill ambassador, she visited African countries and was called “the angel-like ??? ”.

Thank from Hye Ja Kim
In these ten years, prior to visiting the children in undeveloped countries, we need to record the “Diary of Rural Life.” The screenwriter wrote me the script in advance; other actors had to schedule a time for shooting. In addition, staffs sometimes had to do extra work, even though it was not easy for them to do so. However, staffs of the TV company never expressed discontents and supported me, helped me all the time. They made it possible for me to see those kids.
When I was not around, Choi Bul-am, who played the role of my husband in “Diary of Rural Life,” could only put his hands down on his laps, sat lonely in the house. Kim Sui-mi and Kao Doo-sim often said to me, “Mr. Choi looks lonely without you.” My predecessor Jung, Ai-ran also said to me, “You need to take care of yourself! What do you eat there?” The director Gweon, Yi-sang, made adjustment and arranged everything for me. What a hard taste for him! My husband had passed away. When he was still alive, every time I visited war zones like Ruanda and Somalia , he always looked at me with worry. I always said to him, “Don't you worry about me. Even though I encountered some mishap, it was Ok! We will all die some day.” I am grateful for his support. I also appreciate my first granddaughter Ji-yo. She cared about the book, “Rain, please come to Africa !” She asked me many times when I will finish this book. Her words not only push me further but also bring me power.
I'm grateful for Jeong Yeong-suk, who went to Somalia with me and Park, Sang-won, who went to Ruanda with me. Even now, Mr. Park, Sang-won is still helping those poor kids with empathy. I also owe the World Vision my deepest appreciation. Because of this institution, I learned that there were many poor kids in the world. In addition, I would like to thank for the president Park, Chun-jong and other staffs, and especially the sentimental group leader Shin, Hee-jin, who took care of me while I visited these countries.
I would like to say thank you to Han Fei-ya (a volunteer and notable traveler who helped the third world countries), who called me “Your Majesty Hye Ja”. I also want to show my gratitude to Mr. Ko Tong-joo, the only Korean in the United Nations, who welcomed us in Sierra Leone with the highest courtesy and arranged a UN private plane for me. Thanks for Pak Jun-ki, who worked with Far Eastern Broadcasting Station for ten years and wrote the script for “Drinking Tea with Hye Ja Kim.” Whenever I visited children in other countries, she always needed to complete a pile of scripts in advance. I also need to say thank you to my director, photographer, and a person who donated ten million Won (about 340,000 NTD). I felt he was an angel.
I owe a lot to the poet Eu Suk-Ha. In my life, when I felt said, he always encouraged me, supported me and showed me the right course.
Thinking back and forth, I thank for everything I have. Please share the poem written by the Tibet boy Kai Er-Sang with me. A line in the poem says, “I would like to lend my eyes to the others.”
