Defeating the Darkness and Sharing the Sunshine
Shih Ching-Wen, the founder of Chinese Cultural Qigong Association, his performance is not second to Cheng Feng-Si although he is disabled. He used to be a model student in Military Academy . However, in the military maneuvers on October 18, 1973, unfortunately, he was severely damaged by the blasting explosive in which he lost his eyes. After experiencing all the hardships of life, he completed the study at Tamkang University , Department of Chinese and won the first “honor graduate” certificate of Military Academy since the school has been established for 50 years. Although he could no longer see the sunshine, he wrote the “song of sunshine” (which won the award for literary and artistic creation in the third competition sponsored by Council for Cultural Affairs) and played the piccolo to convey his feelings and know his wife. He learnt qigong without advance planning and established his own unique “Chinese cultural qigong” that can modulate body, air, and mental status. His qigong integrates qigong with traditional Chinese Jinmai and theory of acupuncture points, which has been applied to rehabilitation medicine and has healed many patients, including former Premier Sun Yun-sun, Vice President Vincent Siew, etc. The most admirable thing is that he defeats the misfortune and hardships of life with his strong will, provides various long-term scholarships to help the disadvantaged groups, and further set a good example for the disadvantage groups with one's own conduct. He said to everyone, “I contributed my eyes to the country and contribute my love to the society. I cannot be a revolutionary soldier, but I am willing to be a revolutionary blind man.”

The Childhood in poverty
Shih Ching-Wen was borne in a poor family in Wanhua District, Taipei City in 1953. There are twelve children in his family and he is the youngest one. His father was originally a master of Buddha sculpture and died when he was 5 year old. Afterwards, his entire family lived in an unauthorized building of an area only 7 ping, and relied on his big brother's Buddha sculpture.
When he studies in the elementary school, he was always the last one to pay the tuition every semester. Therefore, he had a sense of inferiority when he was a child. He passed the entrance examination of Chiayi Junior High School and the tuition and living expenses were sponsored by his sister. In order to improve the economic status, he stealthily took the entrance examination of the forth “technical class in the military engineering school” when he was a third year student of junior high school. He graduated from the junior high school with the first place certificate and was directed admitted to “ Military Academy ” without taking the entrance examination. At that time, he suggested that the darkness of his life was over and the dawn was coming. However, a cruel life challenge was going to strike him down when he was making efforts to get rid of misfortune and poverty.

The dark nightmare
In 1973, when he was a second-year student in Military Academy , he was asked to light up the explosive in a military maneuver. After he lighted up the explosive, he explosive did not explode. Therefore, he went to light it up again. However, the explosive suddenly blasted, and he was severely injured. He was in a coma in the hospital for three days. After removing layers of gauze from his face, he found himself permanently blind, which shattered his life. It never occurred to him that his body and life would be shattered by the explosive at the age of twenty.

The turning point came out in a sudden
After the accident, he lost his eyesight and girlfriend, and he could not continue studying in the Military Academy . In addition, he also had to finance the medical costs. His life was torturous for losing so much in a sudden. However, he always expressed his positive attitude in front of his family and friends because he did not want other people to be influenced by his individual suffering. His secret melancholy was put to an end until he entered “ Taichung School for the Blind” in 1974, where he could hear the laughter and singing of the blind people, and feel their vividness and happiness. He understood that there is no standard for happiness and pain, and the feeling of pain originates from comparison. As a result, he decided to jump out of the swamp of pain and sorrow.

The beautiful encounter
In the same year, he was directly admitted to Department of Chinese, Tamkang University . With his stamina and the aid of passionate classmates, he finally completed the study in 1977. However, when he graduated from the school, he also became unemployed. His right ear became deaf due to the inadequate care of the old wound. In addition, his girlfriend left him and his military retirement pay was running out. He had no choice but to live in “Institute for the Blind in Hsinchuang” where free food and accommodation were offered and he could temporarily settle himself down.
After living in the institute for a year, in addition to learning the living skill of the blind, massage, he also wrote a collection of essays “outside the sunshine.” The 2,000 books of the first edition were sold out immediately. He collected the lyrics and songs created for the blind to issue a record “Songs of sunshine” in which the music was played and sung by the blind. Afterwards, he issued an article - “Another Sunshine” in the college journal of Fu Jen Catholic University through which he became acquainted with the classmate at Department of Business Management, Chen Tsung-zih. She was moved by the article and started helping him by keeping his company. In the end, she decided to marry him and spend her life with him. He thought, “The person who was willing to marry a blind man was either an idiot or an angel.” Tsung-zih should be the angel to help him.

Entering the wonderful world of qigong
To raise the family, he provided massage services everywhere in Taipei . The work was hard and he also felt that the blind were despised by ordinary people at the same time. In the first six years when he lived on providing massage, he was aware that the effect of rehabilitation of massage was limited, and it could only make people feel comfortable. He hoped to provide people with constructive pathological therapy, and started to learn the jinmai theory of Chinese medicine, Western anatomy, and massage skills for curing diseases.
In 1984, teacher Tsai Long-Hsiung instructed him qigong and he entered the world of qigong. In academia, qigong is viewed as the scientific approach for “developing bioenergetics” by the National Science Council. Ordinary people may suggest that qigong is an invisible and illusory object. However, he concentrated on practicing and feeling qigong because he could not see. After practicing for a while, he felt that there the air was moving in body, and thus tried harder to practice when he was available. He practiced qigong to extent that he could “modulate the air in his body” through his will. The phenomenon of detoxication started to show up in his body and he called it “the onset of illness,” which was formed for the detoxication of old diseases by the air. He gradually ate and slept less, but he was still energetic because “the air moved around his body to make him healthier.”
Therefore, he integrated qigong, jinmai theory, and the theory of acupuncture points into rehabilitation, and the effect was good. His income gradually became stable and the economic status got better with the advocacy of patients. He felt thankful and decided to feedback.

Instructing patients to practice qigong for free

When he chatted with patients, he felt that the most causes of discomforts originated from spiritual factors. The energy of people would be depleted if they have too many worries and thus they will become ill.
There was a saying in the Chinese medicine, “Illness will make the air be stuck in the body. When the air is stuck, the body will become ill.” The principle of qigong is to make the air flow through body by using the concentrated energy to open up the veins. When the air moves through the veins, all the diseases will disappear. School students tend to conduct an experiment: when the sunshine is concentrated under the focus of a magnifier, it will light up a match to burn the paper. The experiment proves that when the dispersed energy is concentrated, it can generate great power. Our mind is a kind of power, an untrained power. When distracting thoughts come out, the energy of body will vanish unconsciously. Therefore, ordinary people need to supply body energy by eating and sleeping.
He combined his faith with qigong to develop “Chinese cultural qigong” and taught patients for free in the hope that they could improve their condition by self-practicing after he massaged them. In this way, they do not have to come to him all the time because the air will last forever only when a person practices it on his/her own.

Conveying love
Afterwards, people started to invite him to deliver speeches, giving free consultations, instruct and skills of qigong and massage everywhere. He was delighted to go to these places because he was glad to share what he knows with people for free.
In fact, although many people have not become ill, that does not mean they are healthy. If a person does not understand how to release the pressure of his/her body, he/she will suddenly fall ill when the body can no longer bear the inward burden. The health crisis can be resolve if people practice qigong constantly. If there are more mentally and physically healthy people, the society will be more peaceful.
In addition, he has silently donated money to 58 social educational institutions such as OI patients association, Genesis Social Welfare Foundation, Tzu Chi, Fu Jen University, and Fraternity Association to convey love and help people suffering misfortune.

Defeating the darkness and sharing the brightness

Life is like a test paper. Shih Ching-Wen learnt to be strong by exploring in the darkness, retrieving wisdom from pain and sorrow, finding the hope of life through servicing people. After experiencing all the pain and sorrow of life, he perceived that: the sufferings I have gone through were to make me understand the sufferings of all the people. Because he understands the sufferings of all the people, he hopes to help people get rid of them and make people understanding the key is the change of concept. Although his visual world is dark, he is willing to be a bright light for the spiritual world of all the people.
