Awakening by love and living a miracle
I hope that my efforts can be a good example for society to make the people who suffer from the same misfortune as I do be brave to get out of shadows and live a different life.
--Wang Chien-Chao
Wang Chien-Chao, a student at Graduate School of International Business Administration, Leader University , was a talented student to skip a grade every year when studying in the elementary school. However, he choked on food and became a vegetative patient when he was a first-year student in junior high school. The 23 years care of his parents and constant rehabilitation miraculously awakened him, and made him become the first awakened vegetative patient in the world. He returned to school, studied at the night school of National Tainan First Senior High School for three years, and was a student of full-attendance in Leader University . The most admirable thing was that he won the first place every semester, and passed the entrance examination of Graduate School of International Business Administration, Leader University with the highest grades. Although he could not speak or move, the continuous care of provided by his parents, Wang Chien-Cheng and Huang Pi-Yun, helped him write two books with computer, “The world of Xiao-Chao” and “The Wings I Desire.” The books were contributed to all walks of life and moved many dropouts, parents, and patients.
His parents were his mouth and hands; the three “No” of Chien-Chao
Wang Chien-Chao was originally a healthy, active, and talented student, but was announced a vegetative patients by all the medical centers in Taiwan such as National Taiwan University hospital, Veterans General Hospital, and Chang Gung Medical Foundation 23 years ago (on January 22, 1986) due to an accident. His parents received the notice of critical condition for 19 times. However, with the 24-hour massage and calling of love from his parents, and his own strong will for surviving, he finally became the first awakened vegetative patient in the world. After he was awaken, his first request was to go to school.
The priority is always on the child
Wang Chien-Chao's father, Wang Chuan-Cheng, is the vice president of a well-known company, Nam Liong Enterprise, in Taiwan . He manages more than 20,000 employees in domestic and foreign branches. However, to him, his priority is always his son. He indicated that when he son was diagnosed as a vegetative patient due to the damage to brain in the accident at the age of 13, his family did not give up. They even brought the medical records to America and Japan to seek for good doctors. They also took him to Beijing to receive the treatment of Chinese medicine. With constant efforts, he miraculously woke up.
Twenty-three years after the accident, Chien-Chao not only graduated from the college with the honor of first place, but also passed the entrance examination of graduate school with the highest grades. He said, “His mother was his hand to take notes and his father was the mouth to present oral report.”
The tug-of-war of love
Huang Pi-Yun said, the teachers described them as a “tug-of-war” because the son would pull and push the mother's hand when she writes an incorrect answer in the examination paper. The scene of “tug-of-war” tended to be seen during examinations.
Chien-Chao is studious. Although he cannot speak or write, his eyesight is good and he prefers reading. Besides reading each kind of books, he reads four newspapers every morning to know the major events of the world.
Wang Chuan-Cheng said that his son had a “three No policy” when studying in school, which were not to be late, not to leave early, and not to ask for leave. Chien-Chao fulfilled the duty of a student and he was willing to cooperate with him to pick him up to school and leave school. In the four-year study in Leader University , Chien-Chao was a student of full-attendance even though he had to be taken care of people for daily needs.
Wang Chien-Chao once underwent a surgery in afternoon, but he still insisted to attend the final examination at night. His father spared no effort to cooperate with his “three no policy” and used to give up the invitation of the state banquet held by President Chen Shui-bian at Tayih Landis Tainan.
Wang Chuan-Cheng emphasized that Chien-Chao is a smart, talented, and versatile child. He performed well in every aspect and graduated from elementary school with first place certificate. After he fell ill, he once became skinny. To support his kid, he would overcome all the difficulties to keep him company.
He used to be a vegetative patient in coma and is now a little giant with wings
The endless possibility of people
Lying in wheelchair, Wang Chien-Chao was a heroic figure no matter in National Tainan First Senior High School or Leader University . The school would ask the students who were unwilling to study to see how he attended class and school. The persisting spirit of Wang Chuan-Cheng and Huang Pi-Yun moved all walks of life around the world.
Wang Chien-Chao returned to school after an 11-year break. Due to the damage to language ability and motor nerves, studying in school is quite hard for him. Because he could not express through mouth and pens, his mother Huang Pi-Yun kept him company to write for him. The examination paper was answered by his mother as well. The teachers in the school indicated that if his mother wrote the wrong answer, he would elbow his mom to sign for correction.
Wand Chien-Chao was not defeated by unfavorable conditions and his performance was better than all the other classmates. He won the first place every semester and his average score was even as high as 95. In addition, he had a keen thirst for knowledge. Although his physical condition was bad, he was never absent. He would ask his father to pick him up to school to check whether the school was closed during typhoon days.
Betting hopes on tomorrow
Chien-Chao used to be a recognized genius. When studying in Tainan Yongkang Shengli Elementary School , the school recommended him to skip a grade to admit to junior high school. He received the honors of the County Magistrate Award and County Model Student Award when graduating from elementary school. His performance in mathematics was in the first place in Houchia Junior High School . In addition to his excellent academic performance, he was a good calligrapher, the second violin player in the band, and a master-hand of fast reading.
However, when he was a first-year student in junior high school, he choked on food and the accident caused cerebral anoxia. He suffered from constant spasm and was in severe coma. Hospital such as Chang Gung Medical foundation, Veterans General Hospital , and National Taiwan University Hospital diagnosed him as a vegetative patient and delivered 19 notices of critical conditions. Chien-Chao was in coma for more than three months but awakened due to his parents' persisting spirit to start the 23-year long-term rehabilitation.
He returned to school at the age of 24, and started from the night school of junior high school. He expressed his feelings and indicated his unfulfilled dreams in the future with “one finger” typing the computer keyboard. What is easy to other people takes his endeavor to accomplish. He expressed his feelings through writing poems and wrote astonishing sentences such as “I am like a bird in a cage, which can not fly away. Who can understand my feeling when I looked at the blue sky?”
He also indicated that he hoped to talk, walk, and write like ordinary people. Although it is a great challenge, he claimed that he is “a small giant”, and he believed that it requires hard work and efforts to fulfill his dreams. As a result, he cherishes the results more and bets hope on tomorrow.
Awakening by love; living a miracle
Love is the best medicine
Love is the best medicine. Although Wang Chuan-Cheng has to manage more than 10,000 employees in the company, he takes care of Chien-Chao on his own. He uses spare time to help his son taking a bath and drive him to school even he is busy and tired. The couple firmly believed that as long as their son lived, there would be a hope and there was no reason to feel sorrow. Wang Chuan-Cheng, a pancreatic cancer patient who is still receiving the treatment, and Huang Pi-Yun, are always the patron saint for Chien-Chao. Although he could not say that he loves them, Chien-Chao found his life objectives owing to the persistence and care of parents, a driver in all weathers and a 24/7 nanny.
Wang Chuan-Cheng tended to leave the meeting early at 3 pm to help his son take a bath and drive the mother and son to the night school of National Tainan First Senior High School . He also had to help his son go to the bathroom. Undoubtedly, he was also the driver to take the mother and son home. Wang Chuan-Cheng and Huang Pi-Yun accompanied Chien-Chao for the entire four years of school days in Leader University .
The suffering of Chien-Chao once frustrated the Wang family and they used to be disappointed and depressed. However, the Wang couple viewed the misfortune as a trial. For 23 years, they spent their time and life to exchange the slow progress of Chien-Chao. However, Wang Chuan-Cheng indicated that he still has a lot of hopes for the future. He also encourages the parents who suffer from the same misfortune to be brave to face it. It will only hurt the child deeper if the parents condemn each other
Running an enterprise is like running a life
Although Wang Chuan-Cheng was busy for his family affairs, he did not forget to work hard in the company. He was ranked the outstanding manager by Chinese Professional Management Association for several times as a model of enterprise operation. He indicated that the secret of his success was that he made the best use of the philosophy of management to cultivate a strong team.
Likewise, the philosophy of management was applied to taking care of his son. The couple did not spoil Chien-Chao for his misfortune. Instead, when Chien-Chao behaved unreasonably, Wang Chuan-Cheng would send him to the orphanage to make him understand the hardship of being parents. He would even drive to Hsingda Harbor where the handicapped begged to make Chien-Chao understand that if he did not become self-reliant, his future might be miserable.
The rehabilitation of Chien-Chao was an unbelievable miracle for the doctors who claimed that he was a vegetative patient. The story still moves forwards. The endless love awakened the vegetative patient and brought warmth of love to the cold and detached society.
I hope that my efforts can be a good example for society to make the people who suffer from the same misfortune as I do be brave to get out of shadows and live a different life.
