Sunshine breaking through the cloud
Famous producer and host Liu Li-Hung of the Good News Radio was infected with polio the next day after she got the vaccination when she was two years old at a time when polio rampaged in Taiwan . It's unknown whether needle infection caused the illness or the virus had already incubated inside her body, Li-Hung could never walk again overnight and she would become disabled for the rest of her life. Since then, Li-Hung locked herself at home for whole day and hid in her room to avoid seeing anyone. Even at school, she would always lower her head and would not have any eye contact with others. She became a close-minded disabled person both mentally and physically. Undergoing 20 years of self-sealed kind of life, with parents' continuous persistence and encouragement, Li-Hung strived very hard to overcome any difficulty and opened up her wings of love to embrace life. She hiked, climbed mountains, dived in deep seas, sang for public welfare cause, hosted programs in broadcasting stations and she even got married and has her own child. She is worthy of being dubbed the name of “Passing Love Angel” as she continues to break through her limits and carry out the miracle of love.
A far distance between heaven and man
Liu Li-Hung, female, born on February 6, 1965, was infected with polio when she was just two years old during its pandemic. Although her parents never ceased to seek for medical treatment, eventually she came to the point that she “would never be able to walk for the rest of her life”. Since then, she could not walk like a normal person. She started to set her waist on one side and crawled on the ground to move around. She crawled over the years when children of her age in the neighborhood were playing hopscotch, jumping rope, and running in the field. Until one day when they wore beautiful shoes to stand in front of her, what she had were still the skin torn off legs crawling on the ground.
At that time Li-Hung felt “heaven” was so far away from her. “People” were also very far away from her. She deeply sensed her difference from everybody else. In the next 20 years, she felt ashamed and was very much confined to herself. She locked herself up at home for whole day and she would hide in her room when relatives and friends came to visit. Even at school, she would lower her head and dared not have any eye contact with others. Her connection with the outside world was totally closed off.
Life shines with love
It's been a journey of hardship, but life shines because of love. Since Li-Hung had polio, her parents never gave up the hope to have her cured. Her mother carried her on the back to seek for treatment at Cheng-Hsin Rehabilitation Medical Center , but they were refused because they did not match the qualification of being a poor family. Still her mother would not give up any hope, so she carried Li-Hung on her back every day to stand by the treatment room window and watch. Then after returning home, she would help her daughter rehabilitate based on what she saw. She had been “watching” day after day until the seventh day when her action caught the attention of a foreign doctor. The doctor was very curious why a Taiwanese woman carried a little girl on her back and stood outside the window every day. After asking and knowing the truth, this doctor was very moved, so he personally led them to the rehabilitation center and Li-Hung started her rehabilitation treatment.
In daily lives, in order to push Li-Hung to walk out of self-pity and connect with people, her parents used all kinds of means to train her and encourage her to grow. They urged her to study harder to go for university education and asked her to get up by herself when she fell. For her to get in touch with people, they invited guests to have meals at home every week. Her mother told her, “You don't go out to see people, then I'll bring them back to see you.” Besides, she was given the carrot and the stick at the same time to join different sorts of activities. Li-Hung's unwillingness to go beyond the doorway was half forced to turn itself into connection with the society. Those severe trainings seen at the time have actually achieved a successful Li-Hung who not only has her own career, but also possesses an optimistic attitude towards life.
The greatest turning point in Li-Hung's life happened when she was a sophomore. In that year a hiking activity held particularly for disabled people had inspired her will to challenge herself. It's a route even ordinary people may not be able to complete, but she dragged on with her heavy iron shoes. With her two hands holding tight the walking sticks, she bore her pain and her tears to keep on walking, step after step non-stop until she finally completed the whole 12.5 kilometers walk after more than four hours with bruises here and there. After that, she found that she wasn't so weak after all. Whatever others can do, she can do it too.
Next year, Li-Hung took on deep water diving and became the only disabled girl in the diving group. When she dived into the sea of seven meter depth, she raised her head from the bottom and saw the sea surface was covered with a spread of golden light. Sunlight quietly seeped through the tiny gap and fell into her palm as she held it in tranquility. Suddenly she was enlightened. She discovered that her world wasn't so dark as the bottom of the sea, but as bright as the sun to spark light.
Become a passing love angel forever
The “love” of God and her family and friends have saved Li-Hung from the abyss of suffering and transformed her to be confident enough to enjoy life. So she has determined to dedicate her whole life to the work of “passing love”.
Li-Hung started to work in broadcasting. She never stopped training herself. She grabbed every chance to make her voice known and she continued to accumulate her experience in doing live broadcast. In 1988, for the first time in her life she recorded a public welfare program. With clear thoughts and gentle language, she became a messenger spreading hope and love in the air.
For years she has been sticking to her post in broadcasting. You can hear her warm and enthusiastic greetings in stations of Broadcasting Corporation of China , Chengsheng Broadcasting, Taipei Broadcasting, Taiwan Radio, Young Lion Radio, Health Radio and Good News Radio. She always encourages her listeners to positively and actively face every challenge in life. She ever won four times of “Social Construction Award” of the Golden Bell Awards, and received nomination of both Best Public Welfare Program Host Award of the “Broadcast Golden Sound Awards” and “Golden Bell Awards”. She was also nominated for the Broadcast Golden Sound Awards for the second time.
Besides sharing her sweet voice, Li-Hung also writes books. She composes lyrics that encourage people and uses words to record the up and down and transition of her mood. She hopes that her words of caring and gratitude to people together with her delicate observation of the environment may inspire and motivate more people as the thoughts penetrate from those pages when people go through her books.
In 1994, in a church gathering, she and Hsu Yin-chiao (Rain) were invited to make a “Sunshine and Small Rain Duo”. It is a team of two disabled females. They are determined to care for the society by sharing their songs and stories. The emergence of sunshine and small rain at the same time perfectly reveals their intention to build up a rainbow bridge through their songs and use notes to spread their love to more people who are in need of love and the comfort of sunshine. They have been to schools of different levels, community activities, nurseries, senior homes, hospitals, hospice wards, prisons across the island, and many other places. They want to sing their songs and help more people to stand up and walk out of darkness.
Li-Hung said, “Disabled people must not feel sorry for themselves and wait for others to take care of them all the time. Chance is always there for people who are ready.” Many things may seem impossible, but, learn to see from a different way or angle, and there comes the new chance. Therefore, “Everyone, no matter physically or mentally hurt, must make every effort to stand up and get hold of any chance and hope that one deserves.”
