Multiple handicap could not defeat her spirit
Paralysis could not stop her desire for knowledge
Huang Yu-Ting, currently studying as a first year student at National Open University, was in a major accident in 1994. Yu-Ting's uncle, who was also in the car, died instantly. As for Yu-Ting, her injuries were so grave that the doctors almost gave up. However, upon the insistence of her parents, a serious of major and minor surgeries was performed and in between, much observation, many treatments and rehabilitations were performed. Her life was saved but she was completely paralyzed. With her mental strength as well as her parents' giving and sacrifices, she made much improvement. She could not see and could not talk; now she can read and speak softly and she can manage to drag her hand a little. Yu-ting never gave up and did her very best to breakthrough obstacles; her will has become the power to her miraculous rebirth .
If life is a flower, then it is my wish mine is a brilliant sunflower, showing my magnificent confidence and light under the sun and bring warmth and faith to people. I was in the grip of death but now I can go to school and study in the special wheelchair made by my mother. As for my future, I wish to ride in my electric wheelchair and read as many books as I can and travel the world. But I wish even more that I, who grew up with the love and care of many, will become a social worker and help others whom need as much warmth as I received. Gently, I will transform my story into a source of faith and power and it is my hope that everyone will feel the love from the world. Because it is my deepest belief that though life may be quiet, but it is powerful enough to stir hearts; having existence becomes hope for everything. As long as you do your best to live, you will have hope!
The Angel in a wheelchair - Huang Yu-Ting
A tragic car accident took her happy childhood away
Huang Yu-Ting, female, was born in Hualien on September 8, 1988. At the age of 5, she was a happy little angel and enjoyed a life full of laughter during her daily living at home, trips to the school and the park. She was a very lively child that her relatives and friends loved to play with. Her happy childhood memories played like films in her family's mind. As fate would have it, a major accident that year, took her worry-free childhood away.
Breaking free the grip of death and saying “no” to giving up
Yu-Ting's uncle, who was also riding in the car, died instantly. Yu-Ting was seriously injured and stayed at the intensive care in Hualien Hospital for a week. However, her condition did not improve and at the request of her parents, helicopter from the air police patrol was dispatched and she was taken to Taipei Veterans General Hospital . Even thought the doctors almost gave up on her, a series of operations and treatments at her parents' insistence. The treatments kept her at the intensive care for nearly 6 months, during which Yu-Ting went in and out of consciousness with a great deal of pain, which was so severe that she would have screamed and thrashed about if she could. However, it was extremely difficult even to breath.
Although Yu-Ting was young, she knew her world was going through changes – she realized that she could no longer jump about in the staircase, running around on the field, or lay her head on her mother's chest and singing. Laid paralyzed in bed, she could only stare at the doll placed on the head of her bed. From that point on, the wheels on the wheelchair became her feet. She often cried and screamed and wanted to give up, but her parents always told her firmly that she should not give up and they would take her home soon. Under the care and compassion of her parents, Yu-Ting's will to fight was ignited. After 5 months, she left intensive care; after 1 year, she Taipei Veterans General Hospital and returned to Hualien.
One slow step after another on her way to academic success
With one car accident, an extra burden labeled “Children with Special Needs” was placed on Yu-Ting – she had “multiple handicaps”. Although she could think as well as ordinary people, she progress in studies was restricted by her paralysis. The trembling in her eyes prevented her from focusing on small characters; the halting breaths prevented her from reading fluently; the slowness in her hands prevented her from writing with any speed and it took 5 or 6 more times for Yu-Ting to learn anything. The path to academic success was like a snail crawling on a long road with the goal far ahead.
Yu-Ting loved reading, drawing, and chattering with her classmates and she realized that her handicap could not block her desire of learning, of stretching her wings and testing out the sky of life. With her strong will, Yu-Ting went through daily rehabilitation process and her bodily function as well as stamina improved a great deal; she could speak very clearly and write faster. Her handwriting became more legible. Every step she took was driven by her desire to read and do well in academics.
During elementary school, Yu-Ting took terms to get educated at school in resource classes and at home. She learned to search for information online, submitting homework and writing email using “Voice Recognition System”, which opened another window for her learning process. During junior high school, come rain or shine, Yu-Ting's mother pushed her wheelchair and helped her to school. She treasured her precious time discussing homework, chatting and lunch time at school. To make it easier for her to enter and exiting the classroom, the school put her in a classroom on the first floor. To help her to improve her studies without placing extra physical burden on her, her teachers went to her home to help her academically. When her mother could not be at school, her classmates took term to feed her, to take notes for her and to carry her in the wheelchair to the biology class on the third floor. With much love and assistance from the faculty and students of her school, Yu-Ting was able to participate in sports festivals, camping, field trip classes, and even flea markets and the graduation trip. The tender and rich compassion from her teachers and friends helped her to forget the pain of all-nighters, rehabilitations and painful handicaps and illnesses. With her powerful will behind her efforts, she was able to graduate with excellence and she was accepted into Hai Xing Senior High School . Her unyielding spirit touched the faculty and students in Hai Xing and she was able to graduate with excellent grades. Yu-Ting now attends National Open University as a first year student. She is very thankful for the caring and assistance that her family, friends and the society had given to her and she is working very hard to attend her goal – to be a social worker and help others as well as give back to the society with her own strength.
