Transcending Hearing Impaired ‧ Chanellaging Adversity
Chen Yu-Chen, a first year student in Stella Matutina Girls' High School, has serious hearing impairment. She could correctly speak “mama” for the first time only when she was two. This period of language acquisition caused her to suffer a lot, but it also provided her with abnormal training. Later she rely on an audiclave and the ability read one's lips to communicate with others, after her self-mental construction again and again, she transcended her hearing impairment, and took all obstacles as trainings, as “only after pressures can soybean sprouts grow tall and healthy”. The most precious thing is that, although she cannot hear anything, she was very brave to join the flag team association and won high-class award in Taiwan . After school she works as a volunteer of autistic organization and becomes an caring and thoughtful elder sister of the little stars. She told everyone she met, “others provided many help to me; I must also learn how to take care of others.” The summer vacation in the year before last year, she went to Australia to learn and to travel for three weeks; she overcame her impairment of hearing, and was able to communicate with foreigners in English to promote Taiwan , to spread the love from love. She received the “AQ Master”(Master of adversity) award from the ministry of education.
Chen Yu-Chen was born in Taichung city on August 24, 1992. She is the most popular figure of “AQ Master” in Stella Matutina Girls' High School. In her third year of primary school study, Yu-Chen was laughed at by her classmates, for she was not able to pronounce accurately. She was also mocked by them often, since she could not speak clearly. The sensitive and shy Yu-Chen, as a result, did not like to speak in public. Despite this, she still has a heart full of love and willing to help. She loved animal, when she raised little birds, she would always picked an injured one, one that needs extra care. After a typhoon, she always beg her parents to take her outside to see whether there were injured animal, which she would always take home to take care of. From a box of abandoned puppies, she would always pick the weakest one. Her relatives and classmates all know about her warm and caring heart, so they often brought her injured birds to take care of. While she took care of the birds, she was like a little animal doctor, which enabled her to ignore her own impairment.
In junior high school, her hearing was already degraded as serious impairment, she had to use audiclave and read others' lips in communication. During classes, although teachers would provide extra help to her, and arranged an appropriate sit for her, most of lessons took her a lot of time to make notes and studied by herself. For many times she did not have good results from her exams due to the insufficiency of time for preparation, or the obstacles of communicating with classmates, which caused her to cry alone. Her parents suggested her to transfer to another school, but after her cry she always responded bravely, “This is not a problem about the school or classmates; I have to learn how to face it! I have to overcome it myself.” “Sadness and frustrations are part of the process, as soybeans sprouts could grow tall and healthy only after pressures, I must also study under pressure.” Yu-Chen often encourage herself to think positively: whatever others can do, she must also be able to do! Such inner self-transcendence, if compared to children from the same ages, is much braver in facing a problem, more positive in solving difficulties. She, thus, developed her precious personalities.
Transcending Hearing Impairment: Joining a Formal Flag Team, a Perfect Show
In the first year of her study in junior high school, Yu-Chen longed for becoming a formal member of a flag team. In her high school, the performance competition co-held by the flag team and the band music team was a large activity for second year students. She knew she could not hear the music, and it was difficult to coordinate her action with the others' so she practice really hard on the complex change of the formations of her team, on the transference of the flags, and various skill of waving. More importantly, she had to memorize the whole cadence to fit in her team. Eventually, she did it! Not only was she picked as a official member, in the competition in 2006, she received the audience's praised for her excellent performance.
Risky Challenge: Studying and Traveling to Australia in the summer of 2007; Spreading the Love from Taiwan
In her year in junior high school, in order to realize her dream of traveling abroad, she planed to study and to travel to Australia . With any help from her relatives and friends, she did not give up, and convinced her parent in a new angle: the worst possibilities of her travel to Australia would be, at most, just like she was in Taiwan ! Others could not understand her, while she could not understand others. She could get along with this for so many years, so for a less than a month trip, she could definitely handle it!
Therefore, while her parents worried a lot about her, she started her trip to Australia . She adventured with confidence for three weeks, and promoted and spread the folk customs and love of Taiwan . When she came back, the accompanying teacher praised her performances with enthusiasm. Besides, due to her diligence in overcoming adversity, she also became the best example in the classes given by her life education teacher.
Concerning and Thoughtful: A Volunteer Worker of Austistic Organzation; A Nice Elder Sisters of Children of Stars
Yu-Chen told everyone he met, “people provided me a lot of help; I must also learn how to help others.”
Despite the heavy burden of her study, she still participated in Austistic Education Association of Taichung City's talent camps during winter vacations in Sanyu College in 2006 and 2007. University student volunteers and teachers of special education led about 50 autistic children. Although Yu-Chen was the youngest among them, she was very earnest. She noticed children's behaviours attentively, and did her best in finishing duties given her. Yu-Chen then came to know many seniors enthusiastic in helping people. She also learned about what she had, when compared to the autistic children, thus re-confirmed herself: besides hearing impairment, everything else was good.
At the same time, Yu-Chen often went to Maria Garden in Wufeng to be a volunteer work. Loving and be love, Yu-Chen seems to found her ways.
Insistence: Defender of the Environment, Challenger of Adversity
Not only does Yu-Chen have a kind heart, she also has strong senses of obeying laws and protecting environment. While walking in a park where pets are not allowed, if she sees someone with his/her pet inside the park, although she would worry about not being able to communicate clearly, she would still write on a paper to urge the pet's owner. Yu-Chen might seem weak, but her heart is brave and strong, thoughtful and incisive.
In April 2008, Yu-Chen, as a representative of Taichung city, received the “AQ Master” (Master of Adversity) award from the ministry of education. Although she thinks she is only fulfilling her own duties, her efforts in improving herself and her bravery and stamina, together with her insistence and aspirations, are already enough to be people's paradigm. Yu-Chen also encourages other disadvantaged and disabled friend by this award, “I hope disadvantaged people could accept their own imperfection, since the so-called perfection is not perfect.” Yu-Chen uses her most familiar animal to make an metaphor, “A domesticate cat with shining fur without any scar is imperfect, for that means she has never fight; a real perfect cat is one that has the power to fight, and could soothe his own wound, while learning from her mistakes and experiences and not to be frightened.
