Overcoming Frustrations ‧ Creating Happiness
The director of the alumnus service and career counseling of Chung Shan Medical University , Dr. Huan Chun-Ming lost his mother, who committed suicide due to melancholia, when he was in his second year in primary school. His father passed away because of diabetes and urinemia two years later. His three siblings and he thus became orphans. Their uncle brought them up later. But his eldest brother had to transfer from Taichung First Senior High School to an vocational school, and his elder sister was also transfer from daytime section to evening section. If his family could not get over it, but keep immersing themselves in such gloomy atmosphere, they were like committing chronic suicide.
Dr. Huang swore to pursue happiness and to leave melancholia behind, he not only wanted to happy himself, he also wanted his family and everyone else happy. He spent $3 million NTD in 1999 to buy a radio period to host the programme “Happy Train”. In 2003, he substantiated the happy programme by founding the Happy Train Association to happy melancholia patients and their family to come out from gloominess, hoping to lead everyone into the happy train and drive toward the beautiful future. For many years, the serial public interest activities “Love Your Life, Let Your Love Fly” ceaselessly promote the following: to take care of the disadvantaged, to live a healthy life, to keep a happy family, and to create happiness.
Huang Chun-Ming, was born on February 5, 1965, in Taichung . Since his mother committed suicide and his father died of disease while his brother has melancholia, although his uncle brought him up, his uncle died of sickness before Chun-Ming could repay him. As a result, he swore to leave the shadow of sadness behind, and wanted to “transform bloods and tears into notes of love” sympathetically. He later found “ Taiwan Happy Train Association,” to help melancholia patients and their families to travel on the happy train, leave sadness behind, and live their hope. Chun-Ming also integrated and launched an alumnus organization of Chung Shan Medical University , which consists of almost thirty thousand member, to help those who need support in the world.
Dr. Huang always smiles, and his laughs are transferred to every corner that need them by the happy train. He tells everybody he meets about “the twelve ‘musts' in a happy life”:
• Manage your time
• Adjust your emotion
• Solve your problems
• Clear your stress
• Act reasonably
• Conduct yourself wisely
• Keep a healthy body
• Make your family happy
• Be happy in your life
• Learn from your study
• Be attentive in your work
• Develop your career
“Only insistence can create miracles of life; only contributing can create the great love in the world.” Although Dr. Huang, a once orphan, had experienced many harsh trials, he also learned a lot from his experience. He knows how to use his talent and wisdom of life. So he often tells himself, “The bitterer I feel, the more persistent I should be. Do not think too much, just do it!” All these efforts and experience are preparations for the social services he is going to provide to the public, for “one can only have the right to spend one's life, but not the right to own one's life.” So he was not defected by destiny. Contrary, he values more of his own life and makes his best effort. He completed his doctoral degree in medicine; therefore, he grasps firmly the current chance to provide service to the society with his whole life. Besides, he hopes to touch more people by his motto “transform bloods and tears into notes of love,” so that more people would have the idea of happy service of “willing to do, love happily,” so as to promote the belief of “love for love, spread the love”. Even a harder path would bring him bright and colorful experience, and this is the reason why the longer he works, the happier he is. Therefore, in recent years he organized people from different fields such as medicine, education, arts, volunteer workers, and happy workers to found the Taiwan Train Association Corporation.
Due to the disasters in his family, he deeply experience the unexpectedness in life and the importance to do good deeds, and fulfill one's duty of filial piety in time. For many years he repeatedly told himself, “I wish that the disasters happened to me would not happen to others,” since it was very difficult to get over days of such bodily and mental pains. When he was still in the second year of his primary school study, he had to face the impact of her beloved mother's suicide due to family conflicts. His father had to take over his mother's duties, which caused his overwork, and passed away due to diabetics and urinemia. It was his fourth year in primary school; he little mind was so sad and helpless, especially the night when his father passed away, he already knew that his siblings would be adopted by different families. He felt deeply of the sadness and helplessness of an orphan. But there was a confidence in his heart which let him controlled his fear and wiped his tears, so that he could stand up bravely and overcome the obstacles in his life.
Just before his siblings were going to separate with him, his great uncle decided to adopted them four together. Twenties years ago when Taiwan's economy was not so good, it was really difficult for his great uncle to take care of them, plus his four own children. But his great uncle did not regret and treated them as their own children. Dr. Huang always sees his great uncle as an important person in his life; he wished to repay him when he grown up. However, his great uncle passed away because of cerebral hemorrhage; he had to face the grief of losing a family member. This series of grief caused him to think about how to help more family in his later life.
Now, Dr. Huang continuously gives lectures, diagnoses for free, and soothes patient, takes care of patient of late stage cancers, counsels teenagers, visits drug rehabs in Taichung prison, promotes community education about family happiness, and integrates social resources to concern about the disadvantaged. He contributes ceaselessly his life and mental efforts to repay all those who loved and cared about him.
Furthermore, he is also very grateful to his great uncle and great aunt for what they did to their brothers and sisters, so that he had the idea of become an important person in other's lives. Therefore, in these years he contributed himself totally to public welfares without any regret, mainly for the promotion of the following social service.
On April 27, 2003, he held the carnival “Love your life, and let your love fly” for social promotion. It was the result of his organizing nearly ten disadvantaged groups without any budget, with his belief of “believe your selflessness, believe other's love.” It was his dream to unite these disadvantaged groups; he finished it in two months, which was almost impossible. There were about five to six thousand people joined the event.
Soon after the carnival “Love your life, and let your love fly,” in April of 2003, the infections of SARS inside Taipei City Heping Hospital was very serious, a lot of confusions were caused by the seal off of the hospital. He immediately mobilized the medical team of Happy Train Association and integrated it with Chung Shan Medical University Hospital , recruited more than a thousand of volunteers to finish ten thousand of paper crane and thirty thousand of angel cards. They also collected a thousand of N95 masks, essences, CDs, books, fruits, and other resources and sent them to the isolation room of SARS, providing the medical workers and patients on the frontier with warm services and blessing. They also started the event of a phone call for each person, in order to accompany family members of the isolated patient, and remind listeners to resume the love and confidences from their relatives. They also co-operated with Broadcasting Corporation of China to provide the fastest, deepest, the most accurate, and the warm messages. From understanding SARS, and how to prevent SARS, Dr. Huang shared his precious experience with the public and told people to overcome melancholia and fear, to walk out from the shadow of SARS, and manage their stress, bodily and mental health. Because of such great love spirit, Dr. Huang received the public service award for the ten excellent youths of Taiwan in 2003.
Dr. Huang never thinks about what he lost, but only what he still has. After various trials, he found that what he has are always more than what he lost. All lives are great, he wishes that “compassion never dies, and there will be abundant of selfless donations,” so that every life would be more colorful, and every hope would be infinite. This is the true objective of “love your life, let your love fly”. He will, I think, create a healthy and happy service zone to provide more helps to more families.
