Fighting cancer with drama and shares hope
Joyce Hsu, who's very active in public services, was born on April 6, 1943 in Chongqing. She's the oldest daughter for Shen Chien-hong, ROC's previous ambassador to US, the wife of investor Hsu Da-ling, and the mother of 3 genius children. She was diagnosed with breast cancer 2nd period and fought it off with love; she became an internationally known volunteer. She studied biochemistry at CIT, but she began writing scripts after her children grown up and left home.
Her works, including “Kang Si”, “Guest of the twilight”, “Mom in Love”, “The Child Outside the Window”, “bananas and Papayas”, “Si Shi and Fu Cai”, “Full of Love”, “Tropic of Cancer”, “Who's the Winner”, “Appointment this Life”, and the "children outside the window” received the best script award from Chen Hsiang-mei. Her TV dramas and theater production became hits all over the US and both sides of the strait.
Lin Hwai-min, the founder of Cloud Gate Dance Troupe said about Joyce Hsu's fight against cancer with love: “She faces cancer with humor and bad situations with a smile. Joyce Hsu can always fight the right fight and make her life more fun and having less baggage, and that's wisdom."
Yang Chi-hang, the section chief of the Science and Technology Division of Culture Center of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco stated that the fact that Joyce Hsu studied chemistry and worked at Stanford Medical Center isn't rare, because there are many people like that in Silicon Valley. But she became public service worker,., writing theater scripts and using art to nourish many people in the Silicon Valley, which is known as the place for tech but the grave for culture and brought about joy and hope to this tech community. She's the best example of truth, beauty and life for this place.
Joyce Hsu's light has shined on Silicon Valley and many people who need help. Hu Jing, a famous Taiwanese actor who had breast cancer said that Joyce Hsu was her biggest spiritual support. Joyce Hsu got cancer 3 times and bravely faced each time. She faced chemo and electrotherapy happily and she presents herself as the example by working in the American Cancer Society to assist cancer patient fight off cancer and formed different family support groups to give love and hope.
Joyce Hsu calls herself the “the worker ant that doesn't die”. She said that during her sickness, what encouraged her mostly was when she sees a volunteer who just finished her chemo session. With a racket in hand, she said "don't worry, finish the chemo and you'll be like me.” Joyce Hsu believes that “the worker ant that doesn't die” is the best volunteer and she shares her experiences with others in hopes of recruiting more people into the volunteer group.
