Painting the hope of life with love
Chiu Jun-Wei was a first-year student of Graphic Communication Dept. of Taichung Industrial High School. When he was only six years old, he was diagnosed of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy-one of the most serious diseases in the world. Thanks to his mother’s whole-hearted care, he bravely faced his miserable life by drawing pictures, though his whole life was limited to the wheelchair. He often said, “Muscular dystrophy limits only my body, not my mind.” His paintings were presented through his website (http://www.anearthworm.com). Moreover, he sold most of his paintings to donate the disadvantaged groups from home and abroad. Thus, he won “3rd President’s Education Award”.
Chen Jia-Rui, the Director of the Taichung County Cultural Center, said that no matter what kind of material or tools Jun-Wei used, his paintings were full of passion and creation. For example, his most famous picture “When the Puppy Meets the Sunflower” depicts how a puppy stands under the sunflower, and gazes fixedly at it, revealing his optimistic attitude toward life.
Jun-Wei was often asked why he was happy all the time. He said as long as he believed the matter would be settled soon, he would try his best to make himself happy. He and his classmates often helped each other in the school. He said it was lucky that he could study new things and become a useful person with the help of the computer. Despite of his disease, Chiu Jun-Wei never gave up and tried his best to help himself and others. He was really an “earthworm” warrior.
Chiu Jun-Wei’s life story was highly recognized by “2007 Fervent Global Love of Lives Medal Review Committee” of Chou Ta-Kuan Cultural and Educational Foundation. So, Jun-Wei was invited to join in the Tenth Fervent Global Love of Lives Medal ceremony from May, 22nd to May 30th, 2007 and to take part in a series of public welfare activities in Taiwan, Jinmen and Xiamen. However, Jun-Wei’s condition got worse. So, Chen Yi-Ming and other candidates were awarded in advance 10th Fervent Global Love of Lives Medal of Chou Ta-Kuan Cultural and Educational Foundation, meanwhile a press conference was held at arts corridor of CKS Memorial Hall Administration Office, from April 10 to 24, 2007, on the sideline of “painting the true love--an exhibition of an earthworm warrior--Chiu Jun-Wei VS an autistic warrior--Chen Yi-Ming”.
Chiu Jun-Wei, male, 17 years old, born on October 20, 1989 in Taichung, was a first-year student studying Graphic Communication Dept. in Taichung Industrial High School. When he was six years old, he was diagnosed of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. What is worse, Jun-Wei’s physical capacity got worse year-by-year. He had to sleep with oxygen respirator. Although he was in such a bad condition, he was always optimistic, and kept on learning and drawing by taking everyday as the last day.
It was Chen Cuihua, Jun-Wei’s mother who offered him the greatest support. Her unselfish love to Jun-Wei made him never yield to the miserable life. Jun-Wei often said, “Where there is love, there is hope.”
Encompassed with his mother’s love, Jun-Wei not only used his paintbrush to draw pictures full of hope and dream, but also shared his attitude toward life with us by poems. The followings are two poems.
When I Am Drawing
When I am drawing
I travel in my own world
A world full of illusion and hope
A world full of passion and imagination
I use my brushes to draw my world
In which I am reveling
A strong power is in my mind
Supporting me to finish this picture
When I have finished it
Another fighting power is aroused
To drive me go ahead
I will keep drawing
What I feel in my heart
My Happiness& My Sadness
How much happiness do I have?
There are so many
I am happy when all my family members gather here
I am happy when I play with my friends
I am much happier when all the people come to my birthday party
I am the happiest one when everybody is happy
How much sadness do I have?
There is so little
I am sad when I get sick
I am sad when I get a bad mark
But I always let my happiness
Overpass my sadness.
