A high school student suffering leukemia today,
an information engineer in the future
Jian Ming-Jie was a third-year student in Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School. His father died of a car accident when he was four years old. His mother remarried later. He was raised by his grandmother Jian Chen Xue-E. Their poor family was supported mostly by his elder uncle.

He was diagnosed of leukemia when he was only six years old. Then he had to stay in the hospital for 3 years. He began to study at grade 4 in the elementary school. He never felt pessimistic, however. In the senior school, he volunteered to help a dozen of the disabled classmates to adapt themselves to the school life. His goal was to study in the Department of Information in National Taiwan University, become an information engineer to help the disadvantaged have a bright future. Although he suffered from leukemia, Jian Ming-Jie never gave up hope and made the most of every day. He was really a warrior against adversity.

His life story was highly recognized by “2007 Fervent Global Love of Lives Medal Review Committee” of Chou Ta-Kuan Cultural and Educational Foundation. So, Ming-Jie was invited to join the Tenth Fervent Global Love of Lives Medal ceremony from May 22 to May 30, 2007 and to take part in a series of public welfare activities in Taiwan and Jinmen.

Jian Ming-Jie, male, 18 years old, born on July 23, 1989 in Taipei City. Ming-Jie had suffered from chemotherapy sixty-seven times, but he never lost his pursuit. He did not hate his mother for leaving him alone. Though he had a strong will, he experienced painful bone marrow examinations. It was a bad memory to him.

When he underwent chemotherapy, his resisting power got worse: he kept vomiting; his hair kept falling, especially in the third phase of chemotherapy. At that time, he struggled with the death around the clock. Because of this experience, Jian Ming-Jie became more mature. He had learned everything in everyday life to ease grandmother’s burden, such as: cooking, washing clothes and cleaning. Together with grandmother, he recycled garbage in the park, encouraging more people to join in environmental protection.

Competition was fierce in Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School. Although Ming-Jie had no extra money for remediation, he still ranked top ten in his class. Now he had to apply for a student loan. He was eager to be enrolled into the Department of Information of National Taiwan University. Jian Ming-Jie said that he would try his best to study and work hard. His goal was to become an information engineer, and help the disadvantaged have a bright future with the power of information technology.
