Living happily without consideration of age
Hsu Teresa, female, born in 1898 in Shantou City, Guangdong Province, China, a founder of 8 asylums for the aged at southeastern Asian regions including Singapore. Now, she is preparing for setting up the 9th one to create a warm family for the single aged, so she is reputed as today’s Theresa.
Hsu Teresa paid much attention to the lives of the poor, which was a secret of health and joy. She lived a simple life by some fruits/vegetables or a cup of milk every dinner, and donated all her money and properties to those who need these. She was reputed as today’s Theresa and also a live Bodhisattva. Her religious belief is to love others--unconditionally. Her everyday work includes: sitting still, alms giving, reading and movement. She learnt Yoga at 85 years old, cultivated her moral qualities while refusing to take meat, coffee, tea and alcohol.
Her secret for long-living is continuous work and volunteering for the benefit of the people. She said:: “I have many friends in the world, and helping them is one of my responsibilities. “
Hsu Teresa had an unhappy childhood, and went to school until 27 years old. Faced with the misery of World War Two, she wrote a letter to the principal of Nursing School, England at 45 years old, and was permitted to study the nursing course for 8 years--endowing her with more knowledge and ability. She once looked after patients and the aged from HK, Chongqing, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, and even Paraguay.
Hsu Teresa often said modestly: she was only a kind-hearted woman, devoted herself to the public welfare over 100 years, and delivered continuously her mercy and love to the poor people and patients.
