Participating in sports without fear of deafness
Cheng Chuang-hsi, male, born in 1981 in Pingtung, graduated from Special Education Department, Pingtung Teachers College. He took part in the athletic meeting of the deaf in Asian and Pacific Regions in 2001, and won five gold medals of 200m, 100m backstroke swimming, 200 medley swimming, 800m freestyle relay swimming and 400m medley relay swimming; championship of swimming competition in 2001 national athletic meeting of universities and colleges. He was also good at writing--the first place in the composition competition of the disabled in 7 southern counties, setting a good example for the disabled.
He became deaf due to a fever in only five years-old. However, with the thoughtful care and support of his parents and coach Zeng Yongjin, he overcame the barrier and met the life challenges in Chung Cheng Elementary School, Min Cheng Junior High School and San Min Senior High School. Through continuous learning with self-confidence, willpower and hearing aid, he learnt how to chat with the other healthy people, and was admitted to Special Education Department, Pingtung Teachers College with good performance. He was also the best volunteer showing great concern for the handicapped society.
He hopes to attend Kuwait Special Olympics next time and win more gold medals for the honor of the country.
