Professor on Wheelchair─Tao-Peng Wang (Taiwan)
[Pass on Love with Wheelchair and Live with Dignity]

Everyone, including people with disability, should be social assets, not liabilities.

    Tao-Peng Wang, Assistant Professor of Department of Optometry, Shu-Zen junior College of Medicine and Management, had a prolonged high fever to be misdiagnosed as poliomyelitis when he was 3 years old. For this reason, the treatment time was delayed. Later, he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy through many doctors’ consultations and his fever was finally gone due to symptomatic treatment. However, he was severely physically disabled in his feet; during that period, he was severely scalded by accident. The huge medical expenses were reimbursed by his father, a security police in the sugar factory by withholding the salary for 10 years.
    He had great difficulty in moving, thus he was troubled by toileting. At the age of 16, he graduated from junior high school; at the age of 19, he completed the vocational training in watch & clock repair in Guangming Dedication College (founded by Lin-An Presbyterian church in Tainan); at the age of 23, he worked in trading company and then successively finished continuation high school, Open University of Kaohsiung, credit classes of Department of Optometry, Chung Shan Medical University, optometry classes of Optoelectronics of Department, National Central University, optometry classes, College of Optometry in Philippines, the classes in Department of Optometry, Wenzhou Medical University in Chinese mainland, EMBA, Postgraduate Programs in Management, I-Shou University and other further education by working part time. Finally, his hard work paid off and he smoothly passed the examination and obtained Grade B License in optical glass grinding.
    Meanwhile, he founded Endehua Optical and Watch Company at the age of 24. He met his true love -- Li-Chiung Huang at the age of 27 for repairing her watch. With 3-year love marathon, he had no fear of objections of Li-Chiung Huang’s parents and finally got married with his wife. Besides, he was hired by Department of Optometry, Shu-Zen junior College of Medicine and Management to work as assistant professor and live a wonderful life.
    What is worth cherishing is that he began with Bread of Life Christian Church in Kaohsiung at the age of 27 to open the road for public welfare in a timely way; during the 30 years, he successively acted as professional volunteers of entrepreneurship guidance of Kaohsiung City Government, President of Union of disabilities in Kaohsiung, President of Handicapped Association of Self-Strengthening and Business-Founder, etc. and set an example for others. He never had a day for unemployment and he even led the disabled to set up business bravely to change the role from a beneficiary to a helper. He lives out his dignity, value and love. He deserves the title “Professor on Wheelchair”.
