Hero of the Sea—Chin-Chu Hung (Taiwan)
[Reluctant to be High Official on Land, Willing to Do Great Things in Water]
Carry Forward his Father’s Spirit to Fight against the Sea, Put his Whole Heart into Rescue Operations; Reluctant to be High Official on Land, Willing to Do Great Things in Water.
—Chin-Chu Hung
Savior in Shipwrecks, Protector of Fishermen
Chin-Chu Hung, junior captain of Offshore Flotilla 8 (Penghu), Maritime Patrol Directorate General, Coast Guard Administration, grew up in Penghu Islands. Therefore, he knows the waters scattered all over like stars in the sky or men on a chessboard very well, and successive captains have relied heavily upon him. In a spirit of “Reluctant to be High Official on Land, Willing to Do Great Things in Water”, Chin-Chu Hung has excellently done his part as junior captain, a role “connecting superiors and subordinates”. He has achieved excellent performance in law enforcement at seas, rescue operation in marine perils, protection of marine resources, etc. During service period, he has trained new members to protect territorial seas without sparing. Thanks to his selflessness, Coast Guard Administration conferred 2016 Exemplary Coast Guard on him to set an example for others.
During the rescue of Ocean Researcher V, as captain of PP10038 Boat and Search & Rescue Commander, he ran risks amid stormy waves of above Level 10 and persistently completed search and rescue tasks with the help of exquisite sailing skills as well as made analysis and commanded with calmness, fully demonstrating professional skills in maritime search and rescue of Maritime Patrol Directorate General and saving 45 sea research talents, which is conducive to the sustainability of sea research talents. In addition, he has hunted down and seized smuggled tobacco and wine for long time, making contribution to physical and psychological health of fellow countrymen. He has also detected Taiwan’s first case where fishermen in Chinese Mainland attempted to sneak into Taiwan’s waters through boat in the color similar to Taiwan’s fishing boats for illegal fishing, safeguarding the rights and interests of the fishermen, which is obvious to all of us.
Through the aforesaid experience, he has developed the skills enabling him to “shuttle back and forth at seas” and proven the common saying to be inaccurate that “Among the ten men coming in Penghu Channel, six would die immediately, three would get stuck, and only one may be lucky enough to return safe and sound.” He has always charged at the head of his members and taken risks to save lives. As a constant savior in shipwrecks and protector of fishermen, he deserves the tile, “Hero of the Sea”.
