Hero of the Skies Lachlan Smart (Australia)
[Traveling the World with Love • Inspirations to the Young People]

“Don't be afraid to dream big and when you have a goal go for it."
                                              —Lachlan Smart
With the support from his parents, Wings around the World, and his fellow people in Australia, Lachlan Smart, a freshman in Gold Coast University, broke the world record on August 27, 2016 with a Cinras SR-22 single-engine airplane as the youngest solo pilot flying around the world in one week. At that time, he was eighteen years old, seven months and twenty days old, one year younger than Matt Guthmiller, the American guy who created the previous world record when nineteen years, seven months and fifteen days old.
This around-the-globe trip lasted nearly two months and covered 45,000 kilometres.  Lachlan spent two years and a half planning for the itinerary. He stopped by 15 countries at 24 locations during the journey. He said that the biggest challenge was the weather and air traffic control. The air traffic control in Saudi Arab delayed him five hours and a half. Similar problems occurred in India and Malaysia. The air traffic controllers in Indonesia gave wrong instructions “They would have run me into a mountain if I had gone with their instructions”. However, he overcame all these problems.
Lachlan indicates that he wants to break world records, not for fame or money. Rather, he wishes to inspire the young people to brace for challenges. He said, “Don't be afraid to dream big and when you have a goal go for it.”
This was why Lachlan decided to fly solo around the world. He wishes to send a message to the young generation: if he can accomplish something so daunting, they can also realize their dreams. Great challenges are not necessarily met with extraordinary people. There is no limit over the skies. Be brave to pursue dreams. He says this by setting an example. He takes on adventures and travels around the world, to inspire the young people. Lachlan Smart is indeed the hero from the skies.
