Half-deaf and half-blind 3D Crazy Director - Chuan Lee Chu
[Desperately live for a second time. Formosa 3D moves the world]
There is only one life for everyone. Believe in yourself and do whatever you want! Don't eat only when you are hungry, drink only when you are thirsty, rest only when you are tired, check only when you are sick, and regret when you are old. Nothing will change if you do nothing. If you do something, there will be something different. Do it, that's all.
- Chuan Lee Chu

Chuan Lee Chu, known as Taiwan's chief 3D director, founded the Formosa 3D cinema. Bringing together digital technology, art, humanities and public welfare culture, he reads the micro and macro Taiwan through the lens, writes stories for the land and record the moving moments of life.
From shooting MV, idol drama, film, and then from photographer to director,  at the age of 35, he was a rising star in the industry. Later, a fist-sized brain tumor completely changed his life. The doctor pronounced that his life expectancy was only half a year. But director Chu was lucky enough to survive, and he is determined to give back to the society with his imaging profession.
Since 2008, director Chu has developed 3D shooting technology on his own. In the anonymous five years, he had recorded the amazing natural beauty, and also more than 100 national treasure-level craftsmen of Taiwan's traditional folk crafts. Director Chu, turned the vitality of challenging the limit into exciting and wonderful videos. In 2013, he became famous with the documentary "3D Taiwan", and won the Creative Arts Award with Director Ang Lee standing on the stage with him and the Golden Bell Awards in succession. He then put down the trophy, went to a remote village, and started to build a 3D action movie vehicle. At the same time, he continued his creation, won the San Francisco SD&A Award, the Gold Award of the 3D KIFF Best Film in Busan, South Korea, and also endorsed the advertisements of international brands such as Panadol and Panasonic 4K TV, hoping to let the world see the Formosa 3D in Taiwan.
The most commendable thing is that director Chu so cherished his "second life" that he held the attitude of "do it, that's all" in handling everything, he even sold his house to raise funds for Formosa 3D's settlement in remote villages. He started the performance on the mountain and by the seaside. He traveled almost 250,000 kilometers, which could almost circle the earth 6 times, and traveled to 328 cities and towns. He continued to reach more than 220,000 school children with the hope to inject this attention to the countryside, combined with the life, aesthetic sense, science and technology and natural environment education implication, so as to touch the soul, affect life with life itself, and continue the smile of the next generation.
Therefore, director Chu challenges the limit, makes every second counts, desperately lives up to his second life. Formosa 3D moved the world and "Taiwan Superman 3D Project" surpassed adversity. Director      Chu influences life with life, help everyone to see the beauty of Taiwan together, spreads the love of Formosa 3D, and is not afraid of being half-deaf and half-blind.
The chosen child
Director Chuan Lee Chu was born in Keelung on August 10, 1967. His father and uncle were both crew members, and his mother spent her time repairing fishing nets and frying shredded fish at home all the time. Since he was a child, he played in the pile of fishing nets and climbed through the net holes while observing the ants on the ground, so he has always maintained a special connection with the sea.
But in fact, as soon as he was born, he faced the fate of being "chosen".
After his mother gave birth to him, there was no joyous laughter from the family, instead, there was a solemn atmosphere.
Grandma called the elders of the family, put him on the table and carefully check whether he was sound in hands and feet.  Can the joints bend? Why they did it? Because the elders were afraid he may have the disease inherited from his father - muscular atrophy, commonly known as ALS.
While it was uncertain whether this strange disease would be inherited, the sound of wind and rain outside the window became louder and louder, and the elders began to vote. In the end, he was lucky to survive by one vote.
"No one can decide the future of this child for him, it depends on his own fate and efforts." It is said that he was named "Chuan Lee Chu" to this end.
Find the way of life through the lens
After graduating from the Department of Electronics, National Keelung Commercial & Industrial Vocational Senior High School (KLCIVS), Director Chu was at a loss for the future, and the subjects he studied in school did not seem to interest him, so he simply applied for early enlistment in the army.
After retiring from the Army Band, he moved from Keelung to Taipei. The first job he looked for was to work as a low-threshold housing agency.
After working for two or three months, he has never signed a contract for any house. He thought about his appearance, and the fact that he was not good at saying sweet words. How can you expect people to put a life-long deal of house on such a young boy?  So he left the real estate industry.
Until one day, he saw in the newspaper that there was a communication company that was looking for a photography assistant.
There he met his savior- Mr. Hui (Zhao Minhui). Mr. Hui taught him to always look at the good side: first use encouragement to build the confidence of others, and then slowly point out areas where adjustments can be made.
Once, director Chu, who was still an apprentice, was editing a film. Mr. Hui passed by him to get some tea, and said, "Chu, did you shoot this? Awesome! You are good at it. "
Director Chu patted his own head and smiled, and he just couldn't hide the joy on his face as he got his master's approval.
"Come on, Chu, put the tape back to the front, you see, you should... tune it better..." after spending three seconds praising him, he then used thirty minutes pointing out his shortcomings, and very patiently told him which part should be improved.
Thanks to his careful teaching and training, Chu laid a foundation for his work in photography, editing, lighting, setting during his works as a photography assistant, photographer, location director, and the making of karaoke accompaniment tape, MTV, advertising, etc.
He participated in variety shows such as Gaga Wulala, Press Your Luck, Ever-victorious, and the Golden Melody List. After that, he was introduced by word of mouth and shot the works of many famous singers one after another.
For example, Wakin Chau's MTV "the direction of the heart" in Taiwan, as well as works of Anita Mui, Zhang Qingfang, Louise Tsuei, Gao Mingjun and Yin Zhengyang. The MV of Taiwanese singers Shen      Wencheng, Chan Ying Chieh, Hsiu Chin Chang, Tsai Hsiao, Kerris Cai and Tony Sun were all shot by him once.
Hsu Chi, who was just a model in her early days, was once an MTV heroine under the lens of Chuan Lee Chu. Even the Grand Master Hsing Yun asked him to help shoot his film.
Louise Tsuei, who was already a big star at that time, often said to him, "Chu, only you can capture the most beautiful me." This was really a great encouragement to him. Therefore, director Chu was more determined that photography was his life career that he was both good at and wanted to go on.
Hand in hand and share a miracle life
When director Chu's career has begun to have achievements, he found a basement in the Wanfang community to set up a "Color Studio" for video making. Although the space was small and would be flooded in the event of a typhoon or heavy rain, but it was the starting point where he established the company, so he had always been cherished it.
Once, he needed a makeup artist to help in the shooting an advertisement, so he asked his friend Xiaobao to introduce someone. The makeup artist who came that day was totally a stranger but he felt very familiar with her at first sight. To put it vulgarly, there really was a feeling that she seems to be director Chu's love for the rest of his life.
As a makeup artist, she was beautiful, generous and kind-hearted. This is director Chu's first impression of her. And her first glance at him also left a deep impression on her mind. Up to now, she still remembers director Chu's fiery eyes and loud voice.
The girl knew at a glance that director Chu was not an ordinary person - she took him as a plumber.
This was the first encounter between Director Qu and her wife, Ms. Xu Xuefang, as if it was destined, they both left a deep impression on each other at first sight. Later, they became "hand in hand" couple, accompany each other to travel all over the country and cross the juncture of life and death and experienced many important moments in life together.
They are both the youngest one in the family, director Chu is the third and Ms. Xuefang is the ninth. The two of them understand and cherished each other. Six months after meeting each other, they decided to stay together for the rest of their lives. They got engaged and married in 1995. The day after the engagement, his wife-to-be continued to work and shoot commercials with him.
With more and more cases, the "Ji Yang" studio was established.
The name Ji Yang is a homonym of Gene Young, representing a young fund that dares to run, rush, and innovate. Director Qu's zodiac sign is the goat (Yang), and the name of Ji Yang also means auspicious goat. For the characters "吉羊", the strokes of the two characters are both six strokes, which is a lucky number and the shape of the characters is symmetrical and upright, just like being a human being - walking upright, sitting upright. So they started from this name from the very beginning, develop from a studio of two - three people with only 20,000 to 300,000 capital amount.
Filming is actually a business involving labor and physical strength, and unlike a production line that can be used for mass production, it is impossible to guarantee a fixed monthly revenue.
But they are always favored by the fate, and whenever the company needs to expand, or when the amount of the deposit book is close to zero, a budget or case will come in.
In this way, director Chu's filming work has never been interrupted, and he once shot hundreds of music videos within a year, setting a record of himself eating more than 400 lunch boxes in a year.
At that time, someone even said, "almost all the MV of songs we sing in KTV are made by the director Chu." It's no an exaggeration in fact. In a few years, he shot nearly 10,000 accompaniment tapes alone.
As his career booming, there was a big accident waiting for him ahead.
An unexploded bomb in his head
In 2002, director Chu had just finished filming Mindy Quah's MTV in Shanghai and was ready to go back to Taiwan to have a meeting with Bai Bingbing.
When taking the plane, he found that his tinnitus symptoms were quite serious. When answering the phone, he also found that the hearing of one ear seemed to be really weak, and the sound he could hear was very soft and unclear.
At first, he didn't care, thinking it was just a matter of fatigue, but the situation didn't improve, so he went to the hospital in Keelung for medical treatment - it was determined that he might have Meniere's disease, which is a bacterial infection of the ear, and steroids will cure it.
But the strange thing was that he was hospitalized for a week, and he took medicine and injections, but there was no sign of improvement. His physical condition continued to deteriorate. What's worse, since everything was in an unknown state, he was even more tormented psychologically.
In particular, the hospital was short of equipment, so he need to be transferred from Keelung to Taipei, and then from Taipei to Linkou. He had to queue up, register, wait for treatment, see a doctor, check... and then transfer to another hospital.
After more than a month, after gathering the disease tracking and X-ray films during this period, director Chu went to the waiting room, ready to listen to doctor's final diagnosis report. He was waiting as if he was waiting to hear the "judgment report", and his heart was unsettled.
Walking out of the waiting room, the hospital was crowded with people waiting for a doctor, but those high-decibel conversations seemed to be suddenly muted to him.
Director Chu picked up the phone tremblingly and pressed every number very hard. He wanted to call his wife Xuefang to hear her voice.
It was difficult to get through, and his forehead was covered in sweat. "Hello? Hello?" the familiar voice came from the other end of the phone, but he couldn't make any sound except sobbing, his throat was chocked by sadness. "Today... the doctor said... there was a tumor in my brain... I have less than... half a year left". At both ends of the phone, they cried bitterly. After their emotions gradually calmed down, they began to talk about it.
On the same day, after director Chu entered the waiting room, the first word the doctor said was, "you are very young, only 35 years old." As soon as he heard such a beginning, he had the worst prepared in mind.
"You have a fist-sized brain tumor in your brain, which covers six nerves in your left brain, functions including swallowing, audio-visual system and so on are all affected. The situation is very critical and you must have an operation immediately."
Director Chu thought of the three young children in the family, the eldest hadn't even graduated from kindergarten. How will his family's finances be maintained in the future? What about the salary of the company's employees? How will the wife take care of the whole family? How will his old mother take care of herself in the future? Both the house and the company still have many loans, how to pay off these loans? Many reality problems jumped into his mind at once.
"What happens if I don't have the operation?" With a glimmer of hope, he wanted to catch the last driftwood to survive and threw this question.
"Young man, this situation is already very dangerous. You should be hospitalized now and have surgery immediately. If you don't have operation, you have less than six months to live, but even with operation, your chance of surviving is only about 50%. And there will definitely be sequelae, possibly hemiplegia and you will need a wheelchair for a life time." The doctor told him various possible outcomes in a professional manner.
Master Hsing Yun came to his rescue
Some things seem to be predestined.
After learning about his condition, Master Hsing Yun asked him to go to Veterans General Hospital to find Dr. Chen Minxiong, who was the director of psychiatry at the time.
Doctor Chen is a very patient doctor. He patiently explained director Chu's condition and how he would carry out the surgery in the future. The biggest difference from other doctors is that Physician Chen hold his hand and told him firmly. : "I have confidence!" , which once again rekindled hope for the couple.
The predestined fate of director Chu and Master Hsing Yun could be traced back to his documentary filmed for Fo Guang TV in 2000 and the prayer of Master Hsing Yun, those classic video are still playing till today.
At the end of the shooting, master Tzu Hui told him in Taiwanese, "director, you are blessed."
At that time, he only focused on his work and couldn't understand: "where does the blessing comes from for filming?"
Master Tzu Hui told him, "look, director, how many people are there on Foguang mountain? There are at least three million believers for Master. But when you say "go", the master will go. When you tell the master to "kneel" (to worships Buddha), the master kneels. Say "worship" and he will worship. You see, how many blessings will it needs to do this? "
What is a blessing? At the beginning, he never thought that the master's guidance would help him overcome this difficulty in the future. He also told himself that if he could live, he must do something to give back to the society.
Therefore, since the first film made in 2000, as long as Master Hsing Yun or Fo Guang Shan Monastery needs him, he will come.
Therefore, many of his subsequent works are related to the master or Fo Guang Shan Monastery, including the Fo Guang TV series Guanyin Biography, Master Hsing Yun's 3D documentary "One Stroke", as well as the 4D Hall of the Buddha Memorial "the life of the Buddha", "a light of a poor girl", etc.
28-hours struggle between life and death
During growing up, director Chu's impression of his father is completely blank, and he even never has a photo taken with his father, so whenever he meets composition topics such as "my father" and "father's hand", he doesn't know how to do.
When he learned that he was ill, his three baby girls were still young, and he tried to spend more time with them, so he often stayed at home during that period, playing with them and reading stories for them. After his daughters went to bed, he and his wife often hugged each other in the living room and cried. Even after his wife fell asleep, he would often be awakened by nightmares, and he returned to the living room alone, picked up a pen and paper and slowly wrote down a testament. He wrote every stroke slowly because every stroke was like a sharp blade, cut onto the heart that has long been riddled with wounds.
After confirming the surgery time with Dr. Chen, director Chu found a familiar photographer Xiao Pan to help him to take a photo euphemistically called a "family portrait".
On the day of the shooting, he kept amusing his three precious daughters and his wife, hoping to take a series of joyful family photos for future souvenirs. After the photos was developed, many uninformed people saw them and praised them, saying that these were the most beautiful, happiest and warmest family photos they had ever seen.
Twenty eight hours after entering the operating room, his wife was waiting outside for him to come out.
And he was like in a long dream - the brain surgery was performed by the doctor to carefully scrape away the sarcoma on the brain, while he slept deeply in anesthesia. He dreamed that he returned to the seaside of Keelung in his childhood. The sky was so beautiful and the sea was so blue, and he could still smell the aroma of his mother's fried shredded fish.
When he woke up, he found that his limbs were tied, and his mouth and nose were full of all kinds of medical tubes, and he was weak.
After the brain surgery, in addition to leaving a long centipede-like scar on the back of the head scoop, he also suffered serious sequelae. At first, he thought it was only a short phenomenon. Later, he found that these symptoms would follow him for a long time: hearing loss in one ear, loss of normal vision in one eye, slight stroke on the face, dysphagia and other conditions, which caused a lot of inconvenience in life.
When he was ill, it was the bottom of director Qu's life, but also unexpectedly opened a new page in his life. After hearing his experience, Master Hsing Yun sent him a sentence "make friends with your illness." He asked him to compromise with the disease and coexist with it peacefully. Since it happened, just choose to face it, accept it, and then put it down.
Start a half-deaf and half-blind life
After the operation, director Chu just helped ING make a film about a father watching the sea quietly on the bank on the Jingua stone mountain. In the last scene, the character disappeared, leaving only a wheelchair alone.
After his illness, director Chu always felt like living in a new world. His serious illness made him re-examine his life. He found that many people only do one thing in their life.
Because of his work, he has traveled to more than 40 countries and seen the beautiful scenery all over the world. Whenever he returns to Taiwan, he always has more feelings and wants to shout it's good to be home. "When you get home, you will find that you actually have a lot. Even if the hometown is a little crowded and humid, you will pay more attention to everything on this land when you have been to so many countries."
Only in Taiwan can there be coral reefs comparable to the Great Barrier Reef; Only in Taiwan can it take the shortest time to go from plains to hills and then to high mountains, which also contribute to a large variety of animals and plants; Only in Taiwan can you see so many professionals keep traditional crafts and stick to their own skills with a lifetime of faith and humanity.
Do it, that's all. It is not only a slogan, but also the motto all his life. If you do it, the result may be good or bad, but if you don't do it, how can you know whether there is even a result?
"If you can't do it well all at once, just do it again." The framework given by society makes people always turn round and round between "good" or "bad", feeling that getting the applause of the majority is the most wonderful thing and the only road to success.
In this regard, director Chu believes that everything has "pros and cons", but not necessarily "right and wrong", "success and failure".
"A good movie that didn't do well at the box office, did it fail? To put it bluntly, this is just to judge by a single value. Maybe it is because the marketing method is not good enough, or there is something wrong with the release date, theater and other factors, all kinds of reasons could be the reason why the box office is not good. If it is reduced to the notion that if the box office is not good, then it is not a good film, it will lose a lot of thinking space", which can be created by oneself.
Become the first person in Taiwan's 3D trend
From getting in touch with HD in 2005 to studying 3D in 2008, director Chu is the first person to walk on the trends.
At the end of 2007, director Chu went abroad to study the 360-degree surround films. As a result, he accidentally learned about 3D shooting. He was deeply fascinated by this technology.
At that time, 3D was still a relatively unpopular and difficult technology in the world. The relevant parties were very surprised when they heard his inquiries because not that many people could not be repulsed by this sophisticated and complicated photography technology and instead became more interested in it?
Then they tell him that these 3D photography equipment was very expensive because of its scarcity. Except that the equipment was expensive, another important thing was that buying the equipment doesn't mean you can using it. The Know-How of 3D photography still needs to be explored by yourself.
In the past, HD was just emerging, and director Qu was also the first to contact the trend in the industry. At that time, many friends encouraged him, but more friends advised him to give up and not waste time.
While he was studying 3D, many friends persuaded him to give up and suggest that he might as well take some time to take more cases. Isn't life easier and happier in that way?
At that time, director Chu didn't respond to that, but he kept asking himself about his original intention, "why do I want to enter the image world? The answer is clear. The enthusiasm! "
After returning from abroad, he plunged into the 3D world with his passion for images - he began to try shooting everywhere with the two cameras he bought, made his own 3D support, and found many books on the principle of 3D shooting on the Internet. Then he drew design drawings and tried and transformed them by intuition.
For 3D, he took carsickness medicine for three months
"Chasing for thousands of miles" is the first 3D film made by Taiwanese people in Taiwan's film history. Many people got dizzy after watching it. At that time, they didn't consider the focal length of both eyes and various technical problems, so the evaluation of that film was poor. Later, no one tried to make 3D films again.
In 2008, after continuous attempts, director Chu finally made a good 3D effect. But the strange thing is that he gets dizzy every time he edited the films, and even vomited while watching it.
He thought it was the sequelae of the operation, but the problem had to be solved. He had a flash of inspiration and decided to take carsickness medicine.
Taking carsickness medicine before entering the 3D editing room, the situation really got better. In dynamic photography, the discomfort of eyes and balance makes people very uncomfortable and dizzy.  They have to take carsickness medicine to continue working.
This lasted for three months. Director Chu found that it should be his shooting problem. In the past, many people gave up 3D probably for this reason too.
Therefore, he reorganized his past experience of failure and made continuous improvement before he found a way to improve. But at that time, he knew nothing about this, so he had to take carsickness medicine to alleviate his discomfort. Everyone joked that he was a "half-blind and half-deaf 3D madman".
In the process of studying 3D shooting, director Chu has experienced too many unspeakable setbacks, but he still stuck to a simple belief, that is, he wants more people to know that 3D technology can be developed and shot by Taiwanese alone.
Director Chu hopes that his enthusiasm can also be a spark to detonate greater influence. As long as 3D technology can be recognized, even if these films don't go to the cinema, they can simply built a "3D movie car" and drive the movie car with his wife to the mountain or the sea area in the most corner of Taiwan and play it to rural children.
The first 3D performance license in Taiwan
In 2009, director Chu made an experimental 3D film, which is also the first 3D real film in Taiwan - "Clown".
People often ask him, why do you want to make "Clown"?
The story goes like this - director Chu often brought his whole family to the cinema, and his daughter, who was still in elementary school at the time, asked him, "Dad, why do all the characters in it have to swear when they speak? But don't the teachers in the school stipulate that you can't say bad words? "
He was speechless for a while, but he also promised his daughter that he would make a bright movie without any swear words. This movie is "Clown", which is also Taiwan's first feature film shot with a 3D live camera.
"Clown" was originally an experimental 3D work, not made for the cinema. However, after seeing "Clown", General Manager Chen Junrong of the Multiplex and Movie Theater felt that this was the pride of Taiwanese, and General Chen, who has always been dedicated to speaking up for national films, told him, "You must put this film on the cinema! Make sure to release "Clown" in cinema! "
It's just that the release of "Clown" was not that smooth, especially at that time, the 3D live shooting technology was not yet popular, the simple issuance license before the performance turned into a barrier.
By rights, it is a simple process that can be completed by following the procedures, but no one expect the difficulty to pass the license check is that the 3D film does not meet the requirements. In the “Specification” option, there are only film-type and digital-type available.
So he asked his assistant Wen Hao at the time to inquire, "What is the equipment in the movie-watching place? Are there any place that do not meet the specifications? How can I adjust them?"
On the other hand, director Chu immediately seeked help from Hu Youfeng, who was the director of the Taipei Film Festival at the time, and Chen Junrong, the chairman of the Film Association. Although they were very busy, they did not hesitate to assist him. They contacted Director Chen Zhikuan of the film department for communication and coordination.
After the communication, director Chu was very grateful to the film department for their assistance. The director and every colleague went to the front line to know the problem in person. It turned out that when they checked the domestic broadcast specifications in the past, only 2D digital type and film type options were available. "Clown" is a 3D live-action film developed and produced by the Taiwanese, so the broadcasting equipment must also be fully upgraded. Fortunately, after all efforts, the first 3D performing license in Taiwan was obtained in the shortest period of time.
3D for every corner of Taiwan
It is not difficult to bring laughter, the important thing is to keep this feeling in the hearts of children.
After the charity screening of "Clown" received a lot of responses, director Chu resolutely decided to bring 3D movies to more rural children.
At that time, the equipment was not as advanced as it is now, so he and three big male assistants used the most primitive method, carrying two giant projectors weighing hundreds of kilograms, as well as equipment such as 3D projection screens and surround sound along the rugged mountain road and went to 22 counties and cities, 328 townships, more than 1,000 schools, and more than 100 disadvantaged institutions in Taiwan, as far as Lanyu, as high as Lishan.
The 3D movie they played at schools was the "Clown". Using the immersive experience of the 3D movie, this simple story became vivid. This is also director Chu's outlook on life when he passed a life-and-death juncture - simple but moving .
Their first performance was at Chiufen elementary school. On that day, it rained cats and dogs along the road, and the wipers kept pulling the rain back and forth in vain but they still couldn't get a clear sight.
So they drove slowly on the rugged and narrow path and came to the mountain with a full carriage of 3D projection equipment.
After the broadcast of "Clown", Principal Huang invited director Chu's team to eat Chiufen taro balls in his office. Suddenly, a child wearing a hat knocked on the door and shouted "Excuse me!" And then he walked in.
At first, director Chu thought that it was because the weather was cold so the boy was wearing a hat. Later, the boy took off the hat, and he saw that the boy had no hair on the top of his head except some sparse hairs growing around the head.
After the boy took off his hat, he bowed deeply to Principal Huang: "Principal, I'm sorry, I won't fight with others just because they make fun of me in the future." Principal Huang touched his head and praised him: "Good boy, good boy, so glad you have finally grown up."
Later, director Chu thanked Principal Huang for giving them this opportunity to broadcast the 3D movie. But the principal said to him, "Director, it is me that should say thank you. The boy you saw just now was often ridiculed by his classmates because he looks different from others, and he often fought with others. I've taught him the same lesson for five years and no good result achieved, but today you used one hour and succeed.
At that moment, director Chu suddenly realized a truth: president Huang's education for the boy in the past five years was like sowing and irrigating good thoughts into him, while the broadcasting of 3D films changed children's thoughts was to see it finally blossomed and fruited.
Therefore, even this was a expensive and laborious thing, he had reasons to persist. Maybe in a short period of time, he won't see any feedback for what he did. After a few years, we never know where the children who once watched "Clown" were, but maybe one day, they will be growing up like trees, with seedlings continue to sprout and thrive somewhere.
Sow the seeds of hope
In a TED talks program, director Chu shared his life story - he was a child who had no chance to grow up at the beginning. When he became an adult, he experienced a life-threatening brain tumor, but he escaped from the death for the second time. Although he was half-deaf and half-blind after the operation, he still made 3D movies with enthusiasm and hard work, and even won international awards. He often thinks about this: "how can I use 3D movies to help more people?"
So, at the last minute of his speech, he boldly vowed to launch the "National 3D Action Screening Project" with the name of "Formosa 3D".
He believes that the beauty of Taiwan can truly touch every heart.
Images are alive. If you visit all corners of Taiwan through a 3D mobile movie car, you will definitely be able to spread joy and love. This "rooted" cause will one day blooms on the land of Taiwan with the seeds named "hope".
The reason why director Chu named it "Formosa 3D" at the beginning came from "being touched".
He mentioned that many people are doing beautiful causes. This kind of beauty is not only about external feelings, not limited to micro or macro concept. As long as it is human, it is beautiful—like the germination of kindness, so that everyone actively help those around them or even strangers; As for beautiful natural landscapes, they don't have to be magnificent, if we look at them with "heart", sit down and enjoy the flowers blooming, everything will naturally complement each other, and the mind will be content. These feelings that  make people teary involuntarily are beautiful.
And "power" refers not to Hercules' strength to lift a thousand pounds, nor to Pangu's power to open the earth and heaven. Without the power of moving, no matter how great the power is, it may not be able to reach people's hearts.
If it is so beautiful that it moves people, and even make them teary involuntarily, it is an incomparable power.
So he has always felt that beauty is a kind of power. The beauty of Taiwan is a power that can move people's hearts. This is what "Formosa 3D" wants to convey.
The world needs fools
Director Chu has always felt that "fool head" is a compliment to him, because it means to move forward regardless of personal pros and cons.
When the idea of Formosa 3D was formed, he excitedly told his friends around him about this, but the reaction of his friends was the same as when he first started investing in 3D movies, and they all persuaded him to quit.
They say that such a thing is thankless, and that you have to spend a lot of money. Even if you do it, in today's social atmosphere, who would be moved by such a thing? It doesn't change anything.
director Chu knew that their concern was kind and they just worried about whether he would still be able to withstand the unknown consequences or setbacks after he underwent severe brain surgery, but he had confidence in the people on this land and drew a 3D vehicle design drawing, which has a 3D screen and surround sound, a shading effect comparable to that in cinema, and it must be able to withstand the bumping of traveling through mountains and rivers.
After going to many well-known car factories and met a lot of setbacks, he finally found a small car factory in Sijhih. The worker inside covered with black grease on his face and clothes while chewing betel nut reached out and asked him for a design drawing. This car will cost a lot of money, and you have to change it here and there... the most important thing is that no one has ever produced such a car before, so in addition to spending money, we have to spend a lot of time, during which we can all complete the business of five or six cars. "
But boss Wang finally nodded and agreed to take over this difficult case, and asked the master Abin to discuss with them how the car should be shaped and how to make corrections, so they took the design drawing and discussed one by one and step by step, director Chu also wrote a simple plan and made budget, and prepared a plan to build a 3D car.
When he finished writing the plan and started fundraising, the public departments and foundations that had promised to help either did not respond, or they themselves encountered difficulties and could not provide assistance any more.
So, for his dream, he had to sell the house again.
    Silly people hit it off
It is often said that the people who worked for Formosa 3D are either crazy or fool.
It just so happens that director Chu is both.
He told the story of his life to Mr. Tao (Li Tao), who was working hard on a new show "Good Farming Taiwan". He left the "9:00 to 23:00" studio, and went to the mountains and seas to discover moving stories that made people moved, and to find the grassroots value of Taiwan.
Mr. Tao mocked himself for being a "stupid man", just right, he hit it off with this "fool".
In the past, director Chu used to think that in front of the screen, he was born for politics, sharp and precise. But at this moment, Li Tao, who came to Ji Yang's office and talked to him about the truth, goodness and beauty in every corner of Taiwan, was such a gentle person.
"Why would you choose the remote or disadvantaged children?" Tao asked.
A long time ago, director Chu started to shoot mountains and seasides, where there are so many beautiful scenery. After the scenery made into film, people watched it and asked him, "Where is this place in foreign country?"
So, he decided to start from the remote villages, take children to see their own lands, and use 3D to develop children's imagination and creativity - children in the mountains, he will let them see the ocean; children living by the sea, he will bring they the scene of high mountains.
At that time, the "Good Farming Taiwan" team also interviewed director Chu's wife, Ms. Xuefang, and asked her how to deal with such huge economic pressure.
"I dare not actuate all the expenses. if I do so, we can do nothing. "
The wife trusts him very much, also trusts the land and the people on the land. Some things must be done immediately, and must be constantly recorded.
Director Chu is very grateful to his wife. A fool like him must have the same fool to support him to go on.
Just do one thing for a lifetime
工 (Craft), has three strokes, simply bring out the profound meaning, carry the pillars of heaven and earth, in the middle is a human standing.
"工" is an extension of human, the foundation of culture, and the pursuit and persistence of many workers who have spent their entire lives on it.
In the summer of 2015, "Unforgettable" participated in the 3DKIFF International Competition in Busan, South Korea. Among 42 shortlisted works from the United States, Germany, South Korea, and Japan, it won the "Best Film" award. However, in the award ceremony, director Chu did not receive the award in person, but asked Xiao Bao, who served as the producer, to accept the award on behalf of him.
A friend asked, "Chu, is it because of the injustice you encounter when you won the Hollywood 3D Awards a few years ago, so you don't want to accept the award yourself this year?"
He laughed at first, and when he looked back at the time, he felt that it was like a flash in the sky, and he let go of the unpleasantness in his heart. "Because I don't really want anything from it, it doesn't matter."
There is a famous Mazu Temple in Yunlin County, which is the Chaotian Palace in Beigang Town. Various activities are held here every year, especially the peak season for incense from the Lunar New Year to the end of March. Many traditional folk festivals such as temple fairs, Dintou, lanterns, Mazu circumnavigation, etc., will be held lively with the sounds of gongs and drums.
From this belief and related festivals, the demand for various handicrafts is generated, or it can be said that various food, clothing, housing and transportation are derived from it because of the emergence of belief culture.
It was from here that they started to record the craftsman when they came to Chaotian Palace in Beigang for other filming tasks. It is the center of people's beliefs and the hub where many craftsmen gather.        For example, the pat-ka-tsiòng, lion heads, hand-made drums, incense making, whistles, puppet shows, etc. These "crafts" belong to the common "memory" when we were young.
Many of the craftsmanship here came from Zhangzhou and Quanzhou. The ancestors brought their good skills and all belongings to Taiwan, and started a new life.
In the concept of the older generation, as long as you learn a skill well in your life, you can earn a living. So they only specialize in one skill all their lives. They do one thing simply, but they do it for a lifetime, and pass it down from generation to generation.
People have never expected that the advancement of science and technology would make these skills no longer in demand, and as a result, the younger generation were reluctant to take this as a profession, resulting in their gradual disappearance.
Director Chu could not bear to see that everything he once was familiar with will become memories, because memories are an indelible emotion for him, so he decided to use 3D images to preserve the craftsman's figures and skills, so that even he couldn't resist with the rapid evolution of the world, he could at least leave something about them with the filming he was good at.
He believes that the process and spirit of using "hands" to complete a task can be commonly understood by all ethnic groups, and the emotions in it can be directly conveyed, and there is no need to use words as supplementary. Their behavior is to tell everyone what it means to be coordinative with hands, eyes and heart.
In the end, he hopes to use 3D images to record the craftsmanship, so that he could let more people see this kind of persistence and enthusiasm for doing one thing well in an entire life, and then cherish everything that is likely to disappear.
Formosa 3D. 3D China. Move the world
Crossing the long river of history and geographical space, we are one family in terms of history, blood, culture, and both sides of the strait.
Director Chu upholds the sense of mission, and go ahead with the 3D shooting project of 3D China. Although he has had countless experiences of being rejected in the past, his sincerity and professional work attitude can persuade people. As the descendants of Yan and Huang emperors, people are serious about recording the 3D culture of China and making it popular. In mainland China, the crafts here is called "intangible cultural heritage", or "intangible culture" for short. These masters are like "intangible heritage heirs" who use their own hands to pass on Chinese culture.
As of the end of 2015, Director Qu had traveled through 23 provinces, municipalities directly under the Central Government, and autonomous regions—67 cities in just 161 days of filming, with a journey of 80,000 kilometers, which is equivalent to circling the earth twice; A total of 78 master craftsman of intangible cultural heritages; 58 world cultural heritage-level scenic spots and scenic spots; 3 ethnic minorities have been recorded by him, the rest are still being explored.
His Leo personality makes him a dream practitioner, constantly surpassing his own limits. Now shooting 3D in mainland China, he shoots with methods such as aerial, ground, sea, land and air photography through day and night, never want to waste time easily.
Many people say that he is a fool, and he will always do things that people think are unrealistic. He is a "masochist" who can't stop once he start doing something.
He said: "I don't have the hobby that cost a large fortune, I just have the courage to sacrifice for my dreams. And that masochist concept symbolizes self-requirement. Only after doing it will you know whether it is feasible or not, and then you can correct it. "
The world has changed so much, for him, to be himself, not to live in the shadow of others; to be yourself, and you will not think that you are just follow someone’s path.
From shooting Taiwan to shooting mainland China, it is not a matter of one or two hundred kilometers, but one or two thousand kilometers. Although he has traveled to more than 40 countries, he still feels like a frog in a well every time he shoots.
He was shocked and moved to see so many historic sites with historical traces, and  also visited many natural wonders, such as the Yellow River, the Yangtze River, various waterfalls and dams. Even in winter, he saw the soft rime and the frozen Hukou waterfalls with large icicles hanging upside down one by one, totally amazing natural creations.
These real stories of his thousands of miles' travel make him feel like read thousands of books at the same time. Therefore, whether it is Formosa 3D or 3D China, what he hopes to do is to make children from remote villages more open-minded. On the one hand, they can see their own traditional culture, and on the other hand, they can accept the stimulation of other cultures.
Director Chu used the 3D space to bring crafts to the children on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and even the children around the world. It was like visiting the scene in person, allowing the cultural heritage to be better integrated through technology. This combination of love witnesses the beauty of one family on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and one family in the world with common beauty and affection.
Director Chu has won great recognition from all walks of life both at home and abroad
