Rescue Dean from Mainland China – Su-Jian Wan
[Spread Love through Medicine ‧ Present Traditional Chinese Medicine to the World]
Silent love, Infinite Love! Finite Life ‧ Boundless Love!
—Su-Jian Wan
Su-Jian Wan was born in a family of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and his parents acted as leaders of TCM field. Therefore, he has been influenced by TCM family. Although the whole family was greatly blown by the Cultural Revolution in 1966, they survived the ups and downs by gathering kindness in his parents' long-term free clinic. Besides, with the immense support of the local people, he was recruited by the army. He upholds the heritage of a TCM family, saves countless people in the Great Tangshan Earthquake and the Great Wenchuan Earthquake. By drawing on the best of all TCM schools in mainland China, he established the "Eight Diagrams Guiding Qigong Technique" which is renowned in Sweden, the United States, France, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan and other countries. He spreads love through medicine and presents traditional Chinese medicine to the World.
Therefore, Dr. Wan, who witnessed the bright side of humanity in the worst of times, aspires to use TCM to save people. What's more, he guides and supports the junior to benefit more people. He is worthy of the title "Rescue Dean". Among the 2459 nominees for the medal, Su-Jian Wan has been award the 19th Global Fervent Love of Lives Medal by the Chou Ta-kuan Foundation.
TCM Family ‧ Tragic Circumstances
Su-Jian Wan was born on November 23, 1953. His father Chen-wen Wan and his mother Hou-fang Li were involved in the Anti-Japanese War in 1938, served as military surgeons in the hospital of Eighth Route Army, and were transferred to the Workers' Nursing Home in Taiyuan, Shanxi in 1955. He was the second child and had an elder brother and two younger sisters. Since his parents were from TCM family and acted as the leaders of the TCM field, he showed keen interest in TCM under the influence of his family since he was little.
In the Cultural Revolution in 1966, because his parents were slandered as the academic authority and capitalism and were subject to unknown criticism, the family was shrouded by depression. He and other four siblings suddenly became the aliens cast aside by people, leaving incurable wound to their mind. This life of an empty stomach lasted for two years.
But every cloud has a silver lining! One day when the heavy snow was falling outside and when he opened the door to enjoy the snow outside, he was almost stumbled by a parcel. He crouched down to pick up the parcel. An unknown and well-intentioned people quietly placed a bag of red dates and steamed corn bread outside the gate. He held tight this bag of red dates and steamed corn bread and burst into tears. He knew the parcel must have been sent by the poor people outside the village as one way of return with their goodness, to whom his parents offered free treatment for a long time. Although his parents received labor reform in remote countryside, the villagers expressed their true feelings in this way! Therefore, he made a secret wish that he must strive to acquire the knowledge of traditional medicine, and apply the medical skills obtained from his parents to return those anonymous simple, kind people.
Join the Army to Serve the Country ‧ Give Play to Strengths
Wishes are wonderful, but the reality is cruel. Owing to family calamity, in his mind, the future prospects were uncertain, and where is the way out? He often asked himself for numerous times. After having seen many peers embarked on the Red Road of "going and working in the countryside and mountainous areas", 16-year-old Su-Jian Wan wondered where his Red Road was. In December 1969, a happy event took place in Jinci Village: since his parents always treated the neighbors free of charge who were grateful to his parents, he unexpectedly gained an opportunity to join the army under the strong recommendation by the production brigade's leaders and local people, indicating that he would embrace a major turnaround of fate.
After having joined the army, he was stricter with himself and particularly cherished the opportunity. By chance, he cured the severe lumbar sprain of a soldier with the TCM knowledge imparted by his parents. Since then, the news that he had medical skills spread like wildfire, so many soldiers and local people turned to him for help. After having learned this news, the leaders of the troops immediately transferred him to the superior hospital and appointed him as a military doctor.
Since he usually assiduously studied the TCM theories and humbly learned from the seniors, his medical skills were further honed. In the 1976 Great Tangshan earthquake, he was dispatched to the quake-hit areas and served as the leader of the medical rescue team to rescue people. Without regard to his safety, he rescued large numbers of seriously wounded people, and was awarded the Third-class Rescue Medal by the forces. Due to his exceptional performances and superb medical skills, he was appointed as the "Healthcare Military Doctor for Senior Officers".
Subsequently, he established the "Eight Diagrams Guiding Qigong Technique" after years of effort. The technique was formed by upholding his parents' TCM theories, learning from famous Chinese Taoist master Chang-xiu Kuang, acupuncture master Li-hui Jia, Taoism Hengshan alchemy master Ming-liang Xin, prominent TCM orthopedic specialist Dr. You-ming Luo and other predecessors, and perfectly integrating their core concepts and techniques. It has the following characteristics: nutrition-based balance and mediation of diseases, guiding the channels and collaterals according to Eight Diagrams, using the energy of heaven and earth, combining self-cultivation of inner alchemy, while conducting treatment based on syndrome differentiation of the patient's lesions and applying Qigong, acupuncture and TCM prescriptions to the patient to treat the disease, and meanwhile, imparting health preserving methods to the patient. The effective rate of "Eight Diagrams Guiding Qigong Technique" exceeds 90% after more than 30 years of clinical observation and treatment.
The Qigong medical treatment of Su-Jian Wan is also valued and recognized by mainland China. CCTV, August First Film Studio and BTV respectively filmed feature documentary to cover it, causing considerable responses in the society. While protecting the health of the leaders of the central government and military commission, he still keeps his original pledge: always relieving pain and suffering of those disadvantaged groups and people striving for survival due to diseases. Through unremitting efforts and treatment for several decades, the number of patients he has cured is enormous.
Found Rehabilitation Hospital ‧ Saved Compatriots with Love
In the spring of 1985, he boldly proposed to his army superiors -- the long-cherished wish that he wanted to found a rehabilitation hospital, to give full play to his TCM characteristic treatment and provide medical treatment to the disadvantaged groups, such as paralyzed people, children with cerebral palsy and critically ill patients. Since the superiors considered that running the hospital was in line with the then policy of serving the people and what's more could gain objective economic benefits, the rehabilitation hospital began normal operation after one month of preparation. For over 30 years, the hospital has cured more than 10,000 patients, half of whom could not afford the hospital fees, but can get access to free treatment.
In 1985, Fu-chen Chiang from Luan County, Hebei Province, suffered cervical spine fracture from turnover in the wheat season, hence causing paralysis. Through the introduction of the village folks, the patient's wife and daughter accompanied him to seek treatment by pushing a flatbed trailer to Beijing from Luan County. At that time, the patient's family only had a few hundred yuan, Su-Jian Wan was sympathetic to their poverty and took the initiative to invite the family of three to his home for treatment. After several months of treatment, various functions of the patient were hugely improved. The Fu-chen Chiang couple moved to tears, tightly holding his hands and expressing their greatest wish: letting their 14-year-old little daughter Hsiao-wen Chiang study medicine with him. He promised to take her in. Today, 30 years has passed, and under the earnest instructions and careful training of Dr. Wan, Hsiao-wen Chiang has grown from a poor rural child to the deputy chief physician of the People's Hospital of Langfang City to benefit people.
Rescue Poor Children ‧ Inherit Medical Skills
To carry forward the traditional Chinese medicine and pass love on to the next generation, the disciples recruited by Dr. Wan are selected from the orphaned children from remote mountainous areas. Although they have no access to education, they have a strong desire to survive and have a greater eagerness to make their due contribution to the society. After three to six years of training by Dr. Wan, some students have stayed in the rehabilitation hospital and become the backbone, while others serve the public via their strengths in the other domestic and international areas.
In 2001, Dr. Wan started to offer medical assistance to more than 360 orphaned children who lost their parents and were fostered in a poor mountainous area in Datong County, Shanxi Province, and led volunteers nationwide to engage in charitable activities in this mountainous area. 15 years has passed. Some of the children have been trained to be excellent medical workers by Dr. Wan, while others are admitted to the university after they recovered. Among them, an orphan rescued then -- Yun Tang, has been recruited to Beijing for training by Dr. Wan after recovery with his treatment, and has become a qualified nurse. Yun Tang returned to the "Sancha Village" where she was born and grew up, and was determined to serve the folks and the orphaned and disabled children who shared her fate by the knowledge acquired from Dr. Wan. "It is Dr. Wan who gives me the second life! I want to return the society with practical actions", said she.
Consummate Medical Skills ‧ Enjoy Worldwide Fame
Dr. Wan's second aspiration of setting up a hospital is to popularize the Chinese traditional medicine and excellent culture to the world so that the medicine and culture can be mastered by caring people around the world to relieve the sufferings of the public. By chance, this mission was strongly supported by Japan Toei Company. They capitalized on the site peculiar effect of Dr. Wan's treatment of a Japanese patient with difficult and complicated diseases. Japan Toei Company then invited Dr. Wan and the renowned Japanese movie actor Tomokazu Miura to film a movie named "Super Power". Therefore, Japan has become the first place where Dr. Wan carried forward excellent traditional culture of mainland China and gained huge success!
Dr. Wan even successfully treated patients in Taiwan. At the end of 1991, after having been knocked down and severely injured by a drunk young man in Tianmu, Taipei, Hsin-tsung Chen was first rescued in Taipei Veterans General Hospital. Although he was alive, he was diagnosed with traumatic general paralysis and bedridden for nine months. In 1992, upon the introduction of a friend, he came to Beijing to seek treatment from Dr. Wan. He observed in the first treatment that since the patient was 85 years old and bedridden for a long time, he suffered motor and sensory neurological disorders and had missed the best time for surgery. After careful analysis of the patient's conditions, he slowly applied the Qigong energy with his great love to the patient's spinal cord lesion. After each treatment, he sweated like collapse as if all his physical strength was consumed. However, he felt immensely satisfied when he saw that the patient could slowly move his stiff limbs after his Qigong therapy and that the patient could get rid of the wheelchair and stand and walk by himself without others' support nor help. After 3 after months of careful treatment, Hsin-tsung Chen already could walk freely when returning to Taiwan.
Besides, many patients with incurable diseases, such as the paralyzed and cancer patients can still lead a happy life through treatment. So far, the disciples trained by Dr. Wan can be found in Sweden, the United States, France, Malaysia, Indonesia and other countries. They are making every endeavor to pass on the characteristic treatments and the idea of love of Dr. Wan, making their due contribution in their positions. During the SARS and the Great Wenchuan Earthquake in mainland China as well as the fire disaster in his visit to the United States, Dr. Wan defied personal danger and led his disciples rush to the front line. These stories inspire his students around the world.
Relieve Various Distress ‧ Participate in All Battles
In 2003, an unprecedented SARS broke out in Beijing. All of a sudden hundreds of people passed away despite medical treatment. Beijing people were frightened and panic-stricken. Dr. Wan immediately led his disciples to join the front line of fighting against SARS. His major disciple Chih-wei Ting, a matron, was quarantined due to virus infection, but owing to a serious lack of nurses in the isolation wards, she risked her life to enter the infectious wards again to participate in medical care. Chih-wei Ting was motherless since she was little. Although she was admitted to the university with outstanding results, she had no access to the university because her family was too poor to afford the tuition fees. Dr. Wan took her in, and sponsored her studies at nursing school and university of traditional Chinese medicine. She aspired to act like Dr. Wan and to serve the poor vulnerable groups afflicted by the disease with her own medical knowledge. Her practical action will always spread the love of Dr. Wan.
In 2008, after the Great Wenchuan Earthquake struck China, Dr. Wan led 14 disciples to reach the Wenchuan earthquake-stricken areas day and night at the fastest speed. When one wounded patient experienced hemorrhagic shock and was in critical condition, Dr. Wan and his disciples voluntarily gave a transfusion to the patient and saved his life. They worked in the front line of rescue for three days and three nights, and brought many people back to life with great love! Silent love, Infinite Love! Finite Life, Boundless Love! Dr. Wan will continue to be a messenger of spreading love with his boundless enthusiasm!
