He withstands hardships with peace in mind; he fights with cancer with a strong will
He is calm and settled with his experience. Feng Yang has an entirely different attitude toward hardships. In his sacred big heart, there is gratitude for hardships, experiences and even little helps. His experience and stories have become part of him, like dreams and songs. Though they are solemn and stirring in a silent way, he commented that "I do enjoy recalling these memories!" He is always passionate talking about the past stories.
Sudden Arrival of Hardships
People used to compare destiny to a trick of life with hardships coming into people’s lives without a sign. In 2009, he was diagnosed with acute non-lymphatic leukemia. He felt the world was all blank. The disaster arrived in such a sudden and unexpected way that he and his family almost collapsed.
Yet who can escape from disasters? He chose to be strong in face of hardship. For the past six years, he managed to survive with the care and assistance from numerous kind friends and family, during which he had extremely hard battles with the disease and almost died for a number of times. His second sister, at the age of 64, donated marrow for him. And his wife and son took good care of him. These supports, encouragement, warm, helps and assistances accompanied him to withstand these hard times. While fighting hard with the disease, the stone engravings and calligraphy works stood along him for days and nights.
Having travelled to tens of thousands of mountains and rivers, endured rains and snows, and tasted all flavors of life, he found that hardship was a school of life. It was this special experience in which the power of soul and art helped him force back death that he acquired a brand new perception of sorrow and joy and began to view life and death calmly. For this, he is forever grateful for God and hardships!
He never forgets to encourage and support other patients while fighting with the disease, demonstrating the great love
In August 2009, Feng Yang was diagnosed with acute non-lymphatic leukemia. On September 23 of this year, he had marrow transplant at PLA 307 Hospital. Six years since the marrow transplant, he was often admitted to hospital because of rejection syndromes which damaged various organs at different times at different levels. He was hospitalized in Beijing for 4 times, in Guangzhou for 5 times, and in Hainan for 23 times, totaling 46 times in six years with 3 emergencies and over 1660 days of hospitalization. Currently he is still in hospital for treatment. For the past six years, he always thinks about the great and grand image of doctors as well as the stories of poor patients who are tortured by diseases. Their lives, like mountains and rivers, cloud and smoke, compose grand songs, give him joy when their situation are alleviated, touch him when many of them give up treatment because of financial troubles, and grieve him when the young patients with leukemia die of the disease. Isn’t sensation connecting people’s hearts together with love!
In November 2012, Feng Yang was struck by ulcers because of marrow transplant rejection which were so severe that he couldn’t neither talk nor eat. While being hospitalized at Beijing Daopei Hospital, Bao, a young and excellent college graduate who just became a formal civil servant when he was diagnosed with lymphoma. His visions, ambitions and life were destroyed. As he came from a poor family, he couldn’t afford the treatment after sustaining for some time. Bao and his parents made a tough decision: quit treatment! What a pity for him to give up at around 25 or 26 years old! They gave up because his parents had offered everything available for his marrow transplants twice, which failed however. They sold the house, and borrowed what they got from relatives. However, without money to pay for medication, the hospital stopped providing medication for him. Feng Yang knew everything, and decided to give his medication worthy of over 8000 yuan to this young man. Though not much, he did hope this little offer can help extend the young life. He had accumulated debts ever since treatment after the marrow transplant in 2009. Despite this, he still hoped the medication he gave to the young man could help him live a little longer, which would be a great comfort to him! He was discharged the next day and returned to Haikou with a bitter heart, still thinking about the misery of Bao’s family.
The master of art gives love to others times after times
In March 2013, Feng Yang was distributed to the same room with an 11-year-old child named Tao Fu in the Department of Hematology of Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical College. He loved this innocent and lovely child, who came from a remote Li-ethnic village in Baisha County of Hainan. He was so cute wearing the red tie for young pioneer. Feng Yang was so happy seeing his cute and lovely face.
In the first few days, Feng Yang found that Tao Fu, who was in the stage of physical development, could eat up to 3 trays of steamed buns for a meal and quite enjoyed it. However, he gradually reduced to two or one tray, and then even stopped eating it. Feng Yang asked him the reason out of curiosity. The child said:" The steamed buns are too expensive. My parents have no money and can’t afford it." Hearing the words from such an innocent child, he was very sad as Tao Fu was just 11 years old and had to suffer from disease and life like an adult. He spent most of his money for treatment, and his family also needed money for survival. But it tortured him to see this child suffer from the disease and starvation!
After discussing with his family, Feng Yang took 2000 yuan from his food expenses to support Tao Fu. However, as the money was far from enough for a child with leukemia, Feng Yang sincerely called for officials of news media and journalists to report the story of Tao Fu to the public and even used his social network to ask for assistance from kind people in the society. Through the joint efforts, Tao Fu received assistance and support from the society. Seeing that he could eat steamed buns happily and study again, Feng Yang was greatly comforted. Only men with a kind heart and great love would be so generous.
In the end of April this year, Feng Yang incidentally heard from Dr. Hai-Yuan Chou from the Department of Hematology of Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical College that Wen-Wen, a leukemia patient at the age of 25 gave up treatment because of financial troubles. This strong girl shed no tears before her family. Instead, she encouraged her family to be strong. When her situation was not worsening, Wen-Wen also painted love with her expectation for life. Feng Yang also learned that Wen-Wen was receiving chemical treatment in the same hospital where he was hospitalized.
As a matter of fact, Feng Yang himself was having a hard time. He had severe ulcers because of long-term rejections in his oral cavity, where the upper and lower lips, gums and inner cavity wall often stick together because of erosions caused by ulcers. He would bleed when speaking and eating. The horrible pain has tortured him a lot, yet he still insisted meeting Wen-Wen in person to encourage her with inspiring stories in the hope that she continued to live bravely. He also offered to donate his works for the donation campaign of Wen-Wen. It is hard to imagine how difficult it was for Feng Yang to say these words while enduring the pain. He truly loves and respects life, whose love touches everyone.
On the long way ahead, Feng Yang, like a mountain, is standing steep and still. In face of hardships, he is fighting with fate with strong will and demonstrates virtues as clean and calm as the moon. He has drawn enormous spiritual fortunes from the hardships and converted them to rich spiritual assets and the courage to defeat hardships. Such a calm and honest attitude shows the peace, courage, and wisdom in his mind with a poetic philosophy, profound purity, innocent delicacy, masculine character and spiritual intimacy.
In this colorful world, he is devoted fully to the world of calligraphy, where he finds a way to connect himself to the world emotionally and spiritually. A stone seal, a graver, a piece of rice paper, and a goat hair brush make his unique way to play his talents, express his perception of life and record his colorful inner world. "Beauty comes from genuine and moral characters", a standard Feng Yang is striving to achieve in his entire life. He takes it as the origin of life and the most important fortune, as well as everything and the only thing he is pursuing.
Over 30 years, Feng Yang has supported many students from remote villages in their study at primary, secondary, high school, and even college education. For years, he respects the elderly and educates the young in the art of calligraphy and paintings in the hope that by cultivating their temperaments, they would become useful talents for the nation, thus presenting and promoting Chinese culture and art on the international stage. This is what he is pursuing! Feng Yang not only likes to offer a helping hand, but is also a grateful person. He once said: During my life, I have met senior officials, teachers, classmates and good friends who care a lot about me in different phases of my life, and they help me a lot in making achievements in life and art! If I could recover, I hope to continue to contribute to the development of society and art.
